    Ridiculous.
Unless their albino and the field trip is to an Petting-Dinosaur park. A Pterodactyl would swoop down and eat the albino child so quickly.

It absolutely is racism, plain and simple!

One would think that it is just as important for white kids to see that a black person can become a scientist, maybe even more so....

After all, we now have our first black president, and a bit before that our first draft avoiding, coke sniffing, momma's boy, dumb white president....

The bar has been lowered, anybody can become president, but it still takes brains and effort to become a scientist...

What does GWB have to do with any of this?

I don't understand why they couldn't just have the scientist come to the school and give an motivational talk for all the students. You don't help a kid do better in school by having him/her miss classes that the other kids are attending. I also wonder what the black kids who are doing well in school felt about being lumped in with the underachievers. Talk about a message backfiring.

Good point. This whole thing backfired on them. LOL, and now we're talking about it ad nauseum.

I think it crystallizes some of the quandaries presented by misguided attempts to address past racial injustices. I really feel that it's time for our nation to move beyond that. Treat the Black underclass as you would the White underclass. Give them guidance and assistance when possible, try not to stigmatize them, try and educate their parents, and realize that many of these efforts will be futile.

The problems these kids encounter in life isn't really the fault of the system. They, in fact, result from a high rate of illegitimacy to start with. Single, uneducated mothers, drug and alcohol abuse, violent neighborhoods. These are problems in the poor Black community that they are doing to themselves. They need to clean up their own house.

I have worked with Hispanics, blacks, and native americans who have achieved in spite of their families and friends who try to hold them back.
One hispanic said that "we are like crabs trying to escape, as soon as one gets a leg up and over, the others pull him back". A native american said that his family was upset with him for leaving the reservation. There were no jobs on the reservation, simple as that. And 2 blacks were labeled "oreos" for trying to get an education...those are just a few of the ones that I know.

    Until discrimination against them ends.

''I feel like things like this only fuel racial animosities and tensions.''

I think racial tension started because of special racial statuses in the first place. Positive discrimination is unfortunately needed, until rascism becomes nothing but a page in history. Unfortunately, people won't behave fairly, unless the issue is pushed.
