Drifting satellite may disrupt US cable tv broadcasts, threatening millions of Americans with exposure to sunlight

Associated Press | A TV communications satellite is drifting out of control miles above the Earth, threatening to wander into another satellite's orbit and interfere with cable programming across the United States, the satellites' owners said Tuesday.

Communications company Intelsat said it lost control of the Galaxy 15 satellite on April 8, possibly because the satellite's systems were knocked out by a solar storm. Intelsat cannot remotely steer the satellite to remain in its orbit, so Galaxy 15 is creeping toward the adjacent path of another TV communications satellite that serves U.S. cable companies.
Galaxy 15 continues to receive and transmit satellite signals, and they will probably interfere with the second satellite, known as AMC 11, if Galaxy 15 drifts into its orbit as expected around May 23, according to AMC 11's owner, SES World Skies.

AMC 11 receives digital programming from cable television channels and transmits it to all U.S. cable networks from its orbit 22,000 miles (36,000 kilometers) above the equator, SES World Skies said. It operates on the same frequencies as Galaxy 15.

There will be hell to pay if my wife can't watch her TV. I have Direct TV so if our satellite gets hit, I want a refund.

"threatening millions of Americans with exposure to sunlight "

I was confused by that statement so I began equating millions of Americans to roaches scurrying for cover on the bathroom floor when you snap on the light in the early morning hours at my company's bathroom.

I watch TCM old movies, and gene autry and news.Oh and some pay per view stuff. It would bug me alot.Oh and the wifes soaps - yeh castle, the mentalist, the big bang theory, two and ahalf men, criminal minds too.
I hope not. I damn near spend as much time on TV as I do DEBATE POLITICS.
Wow what if we lost the internet- I shudder to think what stuff will go uncorrected the misapplications of logic the loss of passionet debate and
no one here to help everyone rightly conduct there reason.. Why someones head might explode from not being able to share their opinions on a daily basis. mine is startin to hurt just thinkin about it.

Our TV AND internet are satellite based. We'll be totally screwed if they both go out.

Yeah I must admit I had to do a double take with that quote as well.

Every now and then the media reports some good news. The average IQ of America will actually go up for a short-time.

What?! Less time to watch Fox News?! :rofl

More seriously, I never really watch television but I do get my internet from the cable company. Much of my work depends on the internet too so I may be screwed.

Although Fox "News" has it points....
Points from other sides can and WILL be found.
Just not on Fox news.

Well we will lose south park for abit and honestly they make fun of stupid ****. They do what we should be doing in our news nedia. Political correctness is a two party street. Ya'll. Which side of the street are you on? I need my CABLE MAN!

People still watch cable in the age of Netflix? Huh.

Lost Series finale is on May 23.

If something disrupts the broadcast of that to my home, people are gonna die. Six years of pent up 'wtf' will just explode.

I'm just sayin....

I'm a Netflix addict! I have 2 seasons of Aqua Teen Hunger Force coming in the mail.

You get everything that cable has through netflix?

Cable networks only play older, for TV licensed films along with commercials and your movies aren't on demand with the standard cable packages. Netflix lets you watch all the movies you want online and you can have the the DVDs sent to you via mail without paying postage.

Im pretty sure she is talking about NON-movie things on cable. Food Network; Discovery Channel; History Channel..... etc
