Yesterday, a listener’s son was offended that his school, Klein Collins High School, displayed the Mexican flag prominently. His mother called to complain, and the school wouldn’t return her call. The student took the sign down.

The school pitched a fit, reviewed the surveillance tapes, found the student, and suspended him for 3 days. AND he has to pay for the flag. In light of the SF story of students sent home for wearing the AMERICAN flag because it offended the Hispanic students, I thought you’d like to know about a story closer to home

 I think things are a little screwy no?

Things have gone waaaaaay too far. :(

Kid shouldn't have removed it, but the school shouldn't have put it up.

If anything, it just shows that public schools are fascist, conformist, intolerant hellholes. I am beginning to pity any students who are being thrust into those revolving-door jokes instead of a proper private institute.

I agree with this, absolutely.

This situation is turning into a petty game of 'who has the power to out do you" - it's getting bizarre.

It was school property and the kid didn't have the jurisdiction to take it down or not. That is why he got suspended.

He had a legitimate complaint but went about it the wrong way.

Also, surveillance tapes? Do a lot of American high schools have cameras now?

According to Klein ISD Communications Director Trazana Halstead, a Mexican flag was displayed inside the building, with permission, by a member of the school's Spanish club as part of a Cinco de Mayo observance. Halstead says another student upset by the display removed the flag and stuffed it in a trash can.

As much as I absolutely disagreed with the school that sent home those kids with the American flag T-shirts, I absolutely agree with the school in this case. This kid had no business throwing someone else's property in the trash,

A "cinco de mayo observanse" requires Corona and lime in order to be legit, since they were the one who pretty much invented this "holiday" for the US.

It is almost beer thirty:mrgreen:

The student most likely should have not removed the flag. Who ever put it up should not have put up a Mexican Flag. Wonder if the school displays the Irish flag on St. Patty's Day, or any other nations flag on their holiday's. I would bet not.

I've worked with schools that have high numbers of students from around the world...they fly many flags. No one seems particularly bothered by it.

Ya know, if I was attending school in Mexico, I wouldn't expect them to put up a US flag just so I'd feel at home.

Also, I wouldn't pitch a fit and be offended if Mexicans IN Mexico were wearing the Mexican flag on July 4th.... it would be in THEIR country and Independence Day is MY holiday, so WTF would I care?

OTOH expecting US to refrain from displaying the US flag on Cinco de Mayo, or putting up Mex flags in public schools... I mean dayum, does nobody see how nuts this is?

Why do WE always have to be the ones to worry about offending people? Why do WE always have to be sensitive? Nobody else seems to give a flying frack if they offend US in some way.

The only thing the kid did wrong was throwing the flag in the trash can
He should of burnt the flag that way the Liberals would not of bitched
since they like burning the American flag

the kid that took down the flag is obviously a **** stirrer, but both in this case and the one with the american flag the actions are unwarranted

It was Cinco de Mayo the other day. That could have something to do with the flag.
It's a huge celebration of Mexican independence, celebrated widely in border states. Students put on pageants, sing traditional songs in Spanish, schools are festooned with Mexican flags.

Most kids- latino, black, or white- just consider it another fun holiday.

Well put G. I especially love the home angle, the whole thing about immigration is that until someone is naturalized they are essentially a guest here, expecting us to bend over backwards is rude at best, obnoxious under any circumstances, and just plain wrong at worst. It's like going to a fancy dinner party and leaving the host an "upper decker" for the next morning.

If I was a parent to these students? I would make those on the schoolboards life a living hell and I do mean that. They would get an ear full and never get rid of me til they made it right cause this is all kinds of wrong.

I do not give a crap if these kids were doing this to piss other students off via peaceful protest by wearing their USA Flag T-Shirts. Suck if the hell up and deal. This is still the U.S.A. and that is that!

*Edit: Wrong Thread. lol*
