Think President's Day, MLK Day, or a lot of other national holidays that schools play up for the kids, but grownups don't really care about that much, unless they're the "any excuse for a party" kind of grownups.

OTOH expecting US to refrain from displaying the US flag on Cinco de Mayo, or putting up Mex flags in public schools... I mean dayum, does nobody see how nuts this is?

Why do WE always have to be the ones to worry about offending people? Why do WE always have to be sensitive? Nobody else seems to give a flying frack if they offend US in some way.
We're the only country who does these kinds of silly things.

France doesn't apologize for their nationalism and institutionalized culturalism.

Switzerland has a strict, even prohibitive immigration policy; an illegal alien would be removed from the country post-haste and with little ceremony.

Only neurotic Americans feel the need to apologize for being American. Damn PC ****ers...

I think these kids deserve suspension for what they did. I do think the school was moronic and in the wrong for putting up a Mexican flag, but the students choosing to rebel and remove it was not right either. If anything they could protest it or go to the administrators and tell them that it offended them some way. Yes I think the school acted wrongly, but so did the students and therefore they deserve to be suspended for their actions.

Since this is a blog and we'll never get the full story... let me ask the obvious.

Who owned the flag and why was it up?

Why did the kid take it down?

Why did the mother call to complain about a flag?

Has the kid had problems at the school?

It mentions the kid has to pay for the flag--did he destroy it or something? That would seem kind of violent and over the top.

Was this in Texas or California? Mexico's history and culture are a big part of Ca, Az, Tx, NM. Celebrating where you're from is part of being American. There's only one group that can call themselves natives and they ain't white.

Mexicans and their ancestors where on the North American continent way before your people were, Rev.

Should we knock down all the Missions? If so, then every Protestant church in New England has to go as well, right? Fair is fair.

    Rev:

I gotta say, some of the stories you're posting lately, you're starting to come off as really bigoted toward Mexicans.

If it was a British flag or German flag celebrating some sort of event in a world history class, would you have a problem with that?

What if it was an Irish Flag for St. Paddy's Day, in a community with a lot of people who take pride in their Irish ancestry?

I lived in Mexico for a few months, including May. Not a local I spoke with there considered May 5th any kind of holiday. It wasn't even mentioned, much to my dismay since I was hoping for a huge party. But nope. Nada.

I think that St Patrick's Day is a pretty good analogy for what Cinco de Mayo is to Mexicans.
Except, as I said, in certain areas of Mexico, where it's celebrated big-time.

What if someone put up a Blood Flag on Hitler's birthday? You would go along with that?

Jackboots always come in matched pairs, a left boot and a right boot.
