Though his agency was charged with coordinating the federal response to the major oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, Department of the Interior chief of staff Tom Strickland was in the Grand Canyon with his wife last week participating in activities that included white-water rafting, ABC News has learned.

Other leaders of the Interior Department were focused on the Gulf, joined by other agencies and literally thousands of other employees. But Strickland’s participation in a trip that administration officials insisted was “work-focused” raised eyebrows among other Obama administration officials and even within even his own department, sources told ABC News.

Do we actually think that this really had any impact of the government's response to the incident? I would wager that it did not.

I've returned from vacations in france because of emergencies at my company.... Surely not as big an emergency as an oil spill that's going to devastate the gulf coast.... but something slightly smaller.

Well, I do not run a company, but for something as big and cumbersome as the American government, it seems that a department can function even if its head is not there in person. Granted, who is to say that he was not on the phone constantly helping to delegate to his senior staff (as he should be doing in theory)?

Uhm, if he is not needed to be there during this disaster, why do we need him at all?

Lets not even get into tax dollars paying for a rafting trip for him and his wife.....


This sort of shennenigans leads me to speculate that the Intierior dept's ship aint sailing right.

I don't really feel that we do actually need him, but that is not to say that he could not manage a crisis from somewhere other than his office.

After reading the article, it does seem like he made an error in judgement. What was he thinking at the time he left for his trip? Not sure, but it would be interesting to get his perspective. Another point is that there doesn't seem to be any mishaps because of his unavailability, but he did have to get helicoptered out of the canyon on taxpayers dime.

I think the "mishaps" started a long time ago, this is just a symptom of the problem.

Was it there responsibility to make sure the Coast Guard had these firebooms? If so, then yes in my opinion.



I read in the ny times, had we had these "firebooms" that they could have contained 95% of this oil..... I am actually outraged over this....

Or was it BP, or the company they hired to run the rig? I don't know, but I'm not ready to point fingers yet.

In any event, so far, nothing of note seems to have been transpired in the absence of the ID chief, apart from the taxpayers expense of having to collect him via helicopter.
