Arizona bill targets 'human-animal hybrids'

The Arizona state Senate on Thursday passed a bill making it illegal for a person to "intentionally or knowingly creating a human-animal hybrid."

The bill, which passed 16 to 12, would prohibit anyone in the state from "creating or attempting to create an in vitro human embryo by any means other than fertilization of a human egg by a human sperm."

A birther law, the illegal immigration law, a law banning teachers with thick accents, and now we're progressing into the "legislate against comic book villains" stage. What's next, Arizona? A law banning unregistered doomsday weapons?

Well remember....these are the same folks who fought MLK day recognition for longer than any other state. So that should tell you a little bit about them.

In our defense that was because it also would make George Washington's and Abe Lincoln's birthdays into one holiday to make room for MLK day, otherwise you'd have three holidays in one month, February.

MLK is great and but not great enough to marginalize Lincoln and Washington, at least that was the argument.

This coming from a State more screwed up than AZ. :rofl. Just love some of your elected officials and their ideas.

Actually, if you new the history it was because of the Governor at the time. As stated earlier, it had a lot to do on how to shift holidays to make room for MLK. and the Gov was a bit off.

I saw nothing wrong with the discouraging of teachers with thick accents. There has to be some standard in language for teaching to be effective. The "right" of the teacher to not speak clearly in a language all the kids are expected to understand is of far less importance than the rights of the kids to get an adequate education.

But Martin Luther King Day is in January not February. So there wouldn't be three holidays in one month.

To be fair, at least to my knowledge and I lived there at the time, Arizona is the only state in the union that established MLK day by plebiscite.

Endorse direct democracy or oppose it (and I oppose it), Arizonans were the only Americans to vote MLK day into law. Give them some love for that.

As I recall the argument against MLK day was that he was a communist subversive with a second-rate mind who plagiarized his master's thesis and routinely cheated on his wife. I always thought, well, gee, and for all of that, he managed to profoundly change this country: give the man a holiday!

That was the CLAIM. I think there was alot more behind it that you are willing to overlook.

Malcolm X has his own holiday? :confused:

It's not "discouraging" them, it's firing them if they don't meet an undefined standard.

Dear Republicans,

It is not April First that was last month.

:rofl

I kinda wanna move to Arizona just to make up wacky laws and see if I can get them passed.

A law against building igloos with taxpayers money.
A law against schools mentioning primates when talking about evolution.
A law against cherry flavored condoms.

I bet I could get em all passed.

From what I have read so far is that 12 voted against this bill, and 16 voted for this bill all Republicans. This law is the Gop's law all the way.....

Which is precisely why I love the GOP. :cool:

So you are for Bills that have stupid Moron written all over them? :mrgreen:

That wasn't necessary. However, since you ask, I am all for the states stepping up and taking care of the federal government's job when it won't.

So you are for states that make up laws against Human animal Hybrids which any biologist will tell you is not biologically possible. Got it thanks.

That's not what the law is actually about.

Yes it is about this type of thing

SB1307 - 492R - Senate Fact Sheet

1. Prohibits a person from intentionally or knowingly:

a) Creating or attempting to create an in vitro human embryo by any means other than fertilization of a human egg by a human sperm;

b) creating or attempting to create a human-animal hybrid;

c) transferring or attempting to transfer a human embryo into a nonhuman womb;

d) transferring or attempting to transfer a nonhuman embryo into a human womb; or

e) transporting or receiving for any purpose a human-animal hybrid.

The law can be found here

Yes, I have read the law. It is not about creating manbearpigs. It is about preempting unethical genetic research using human embryos in scenario where they are placed in nonhuman wombs, etc. It's also to preempt any splicing of the human genome with animal genes if we discover a possibility.

No one who voted for this law thinks or believes that we are currently capable of hybrids now. No one who voted for this law actually though there would be a turtle with a human head running around.

What you claim is not what the law is about. Sorry, but you are flat out wrong which is kind of funny considering the alacrity with which you took to calling others stupid.

It biologically imposable to do so Jillman. Any sound biologist well tell you that is gentility imposable to do so. It will only happen in movies, and comics book in another words.. This is why the bill is kind of making Arizona a laughing stock.
