This is another good issue for Republicans and Conservatives in the November elections.......Democrats don't like this law because they want the Hispanic vote and don't really care how many illegals are in this country.....Republicans and Conservatives put their political positions aside and want the checks made.

So do the American people it seems........

Nationally, 60% Favor Letting Local Police Stop and Verify Immigration Status

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer last week signed a new law into effect that authorizes local police to stop and verify the immigration status of anyone they suspect of being an illegal immigrant. A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey finds that 60% of voters nationwide favor such a law, while 31% are opposed.

Don't the police need probable cause to stop folks? Is just being hispanic probable cause? Why does the GOP like to trample on the constitution?
They don't seem to care about ilegals either. They had six years to do something and totally ignored the problem.

It was the right thing to do,if an illegal breaks the law by speeding for example it only makes sense to see if they did anything else illegal.

Police always check to see if someone has an outstanding warrent when they stop everyone else.....I dont see what the big deal about this is,nothing racial about it.

Racial profiling is strictly prohibited in the Arizona law.Police can only check on immigration status if the person broke another law.Do you agree that it's a good thing that Police check to see if a person has a warrent out for arrest?Pretty much the same thing.

But just because a legal citizen has broken the law by speeding does that mean they can see if you did anything else illegal?

Do you seriously think if Jose Darkskin and Johan Blondehair both got stopped by the police under this law that Johan would be asked for a green card?

This is already mostly how the police operate anyways, at least in LA. Dont get me wrong, I support the police but the best way to get their attention around here is to have skin darker than medium rare. I have Latino friends who've been stopped, searched, and had their information ran while wearing a button-down and slacks on their way home from work. I've walked through the same area with a hoodie, torn jeans, and carrying an un-marked bag and never been given a second look.

Yes....Outstanding warrents.

If the police actually follow the law as written they will....

I can't speak for L.A.,but here in Minnesota I've seen many white guys get stopped and searched the same way....Me included.

OK. But he said the police could stop someone if they suspected they were illegals. That pretty much covers every hispanic in the country. Of course if someone is stopped for a crime their identity should be verified and if found to be ilegal they should be deported.

"authorizes local police to stop and verify the immigration status of anyone they suspect of being an illegal immigrant"

Yes they can. When they run your license if they find you are a parole violator as an example they will arrest you.

My understanding is that you first have to be stopped becuase of some other violation. So if you get stopped for speeding then this law can go into effect.

I just wonder why people are giving the folks in AZ such a hard time. If the Federal government did one of it's principle jobs and protected the borders, or found a way to detain illegals AZ would not have to do the job the federal government should be doing.

No...Democrats don't like it because people shouldn't be able to be stopped and detained by the police simply based on the color of their skin.
That is un-American and unconstitutional.

Even ultra-conservative law enforcement agencies across this country are coming out strongly against this horrible and racist law.

Nobody has yet established how a LEO is supposed to identify an illegal immigrant by looks alone and without racially profiling.

Additionally, how does a citizen prove his status if stopped? I don't know about Arizona, but in Texas just having a drivers license doesn't prove that.

I love the part of this law that says that any citizen can sue if they feel that LEO's are not actively enforcing the law.
There are an awful lot of of sue-happy wackos and money grabbing lawyers that are elated with the AZ legislature now. Wonder how long until Arizona goes bankrupt.:doh

You can count me amongst the 60%, however, if that number was made up of purely conservatives and republicans, the % number would be much lower.

I think this issue transcends ideology. There is no defense for not enforcing the law. I don't buy the racial profiling argument. Partly because, the people crying racism appear to me to be the obvious racists in their contempt for our laws and their racial bias towards Mexican nationalists, ahead of US national interest. This ain't Mexico.

If our borders were being over run by red-headed pygmies, and we took steps to remedy that situation, does anyone truly think La Raza would give a rat's ass?

Get legal or get the **** out.

Go Arizona!

I suppose that would depend how long it takes them to get their illegal immigrant infestation under control.

There are already laws on the books that are not being enforced that could accomplish that better than this wacko law.

Allowing police to detain people just because their shade of color is different than another is just plain and simply wrong. It is contrary to the basic principles of fairness, equality and justice for all.

Then...if it wasn't wacko enough, they throw in the part that LEO's can be sued by any joe plumber that wants to file a lawsuit.
Seriously...the people writing these laws couldn't have made a bigger blunder.

Show us where it says this in the bill.

I think the way those suits typically work is that the plaintiff is suing to compel the relevant government official to act in some way or other. I believe money awards are usually nominal, but I could be mistaken.

In any event, the same official could be sued for racial profiling or selective enforcement of the same law, so he's pretty much damned if he does and damned if he doesn't.

Read the bill. If the police have "reasonable suspicion" that the person might be undocumented, they have the right to detain and require documentation.

Do you seriously believe that they are going to be stopping the blue-eyed blonde Canadian? :doh

This POS legislation is going to disproportionately going to target latinos (Undocumented or American citizens), especially those of the lower socio-economic status.

I'm not in favor of stopping people just to check legal residency. But, it's high time to get police more involved in enforcing ALL laws. Illegal immigration is a big problem, American citizens want the laws enforced, especially with the escalation of the drug cartel. It is getting out of hand in AZ.

Even Jeb Bush has come out and said how stupid this Arizona law is.....

Not to mention Tancredo and several other ultra-conservative, hard line anti-immigrant types.

Just playing devil's advocate here, but a lot of states and municipalities look at enforcing Federal laws as a sort of unfunded mandate.

The problem with the Hispanic community is that the whole community is aiding and abeting their friends and relatives. They have a lot of solidarity. There is a huge network. They need to take responsiblity for that fact. They can't have their cake and eat it too, crying racism when the authorities call them on their game.
