The Democratic National Committee this morning released this clip of the president rallying the troops, if rather coolly, for 2010. Obama's express goal: "reconnecting" with the voters who voted for the first time in 2008, but who may not plan to vote in the lower-profile Congressional elections this year.

Obama speaks with unusual demographic frankness about his coalition in his appeal to "young people, African-Americans, Latinos, and women who powered our victory in 2008 [to] stand together once again."

I'd link the video of the President speaking, but this mac... no,
the video plays... but this crapmac doesn't allow for much else. It's horrible!

I do find it interesting that the Tea Party is racist... yet here the President of the United States of America is playing the race card so... blatantly. White Males, Asians... you need not apply.

Yes... telling a demographic that tends not to vote to get out there and vote is so outrageous.

Now who's being PC?

Obama was I assume directing his message at demographics that don't have such a great habit of getting to the voting booths, and these demographics make up a larger portion of the Democratic party than the Republicans, so I'm not really sure how Orion demonstrated that he didn't watch the video. Trying to encourage your base to vote only makes sense, imho.

I really don't know how women voters fall between the two parties.

If this CNN exit poll from 2004 is anything to go by then Obama targeted his message accurately.

I didn't really see it as a race card. It was more President Obama wanting demographics that may not be as inclined to go out and vote this year as they did in 2008. Plus if I remember correctly those were the groups that came out the most and voted for him. So, he is wrong for trying to get those who voted for him to vote for others too?

Actually I did.

What he's saying is true based on the available data.

I do find it interesting that the Tea Party is racist... yet here the President of the United States of America is playing the race card so... blatantly. White Males, Asians... you need not apply.

He also didn't mention gays, so he's secretly a gay-bashing bigot.

PS.... I've heard that some of his best friends are white ;)

He also doesn't seem to think very highly of Inuits.

Sounds like a racist statement to me but it does not surprise me.....After the Rev. Wright fiasco I suspected Obama may be a closet racist........

If these are the demographics that actually fell for all that hopey-changey bull**** he pedaled in 2008, I'd rather they just stayed home.

Meh we are all lazy. Plus those of us in college are far to worried about finals and papers (bastard things kill my soul) than we are about politics.

Indeed. I may have been one of the few who recalled Chris Matthews declaring the youth project of 2004 as hopelessly naive due to their preoccupation with more immediate deadlines and social affairs. I also use the insight gathered by Kevin Phillips, Richard Scammon, and Ben Wattenberg who all concluded that the youth-led New Left was an electoral dead-end.

Guess I should have post my thread here.

Re: Obama seeks to 'reconnect...young people, African-Americans, Latinos, and women'

This young person is going to vote in November, but I'm voting Republican all the way through. I think Obama's comments weren't "racist" though. However it wasn't right for him to leave out white people and males, it almost indirectly suggests that he doesn't want anyone but blacks, Latinos, and women to vote. I know that's not his message, but that's the way it comes across.

Well, there's that whole saying that goes something like, "Never explain yourself -- your enemies won't believe you and your friends don't need you to." Point being is that white male Democrats aren't generally going to take it in the way that you interpreted. The "undecided voters" might, but those guys are idiots anyway...just shout "go [name of popular local sports team]" one day before the election and they'll come back to the Democrats in no time.

I really wouldn't mind if everyone successfully targeted by soundbite-driven marketing campaigns stayed home (including anybody quoting Palin for any reason whatsoever).

Its not "playing the race card".

Three of the largest contingent of voters for Obama were latinos, blacks, and young people. Indeed. He had near record, if not record, turn out and support from those groups.

There is times I have no problem saying someone is playing the race card. This isn't it. This is someone being a politician. Election time is heating up and he's trying to rally three groups who he had strong sway over and support from in 2008. Not really unusual here.

Re: Obama seeks to 'reconnect...young people, African-Americans, Latinos, and women'

I don't see this as Obama playing the "Race card" here, He is pandering to groups that got him elected. I think actually he's a bit scared. They came out for him, but he has been the touch of death to other canidates he endorses....
