    Media Exaggerate Tea Party's Sway

Media exaggerate Tea Party's sway, data suggests - Yahoo! News

Smith and Martin note that recent surveys charting the demographic profile of Tea Party supporters have turned up strikingly similar and unsurprising results. "In fact, there is a word for what poll after poll depicts as a class of largely white, middle-class, middle-aged voters who are aggrieved: Republicans."

That conclusion tracks the recent geographic breakdown of Tea Party strongholds put together by a PBS project called Patchwork Nation. That study found the highest quotient of Tea Party activists clustered in counties it characterizes as "Boom Town" regions, places that "experienced rapid growth around 2000 and the worst part of the housing crash that followed." Here is the project's map showing where Tea Party sentiment is strongest:
Hilarious, but didn't you know this already?

    Tea Party = Republican.

I don't think your statement is perfect, but it's not far from the truth imo.

I'd be willing to bet that many of the independents in the tea party movement are people who nearly always vote republican and felt disenfranchised after 2006 and 2008 and started considering themselves independent conservatives.

I find it kind of funny that the Tea Partiers are blaming Obama, who came into office after the crash began. They should be blaming the president whose policies started the whole process that finally culminated in the collapse of our economy - Bill Clinton. Of course, Obama is actually making things much worse, but he and Bush merely stepped into the shoes that Clinton provided. Those who wax fond for Clinton need to reexamine their misplaced adoration. Clinton screwed them, as well as the rest of us.

I wouldn't stop at Clinton and remember the savings and loan implosion under Bush 41.

Re: Media Exaggerate Tea Party's Sway

So from this story it seems....

A large majority of the Tea Party population vote republican (Note, not necessarily are registered republicans but tend to vote republican).

Some random opinion columnist thinks it has "less influence" then others suggest, which is a completely ambiguous comment as there is nothing concrete there. How much are the "others" suggesting? Is "less" still a decent bit if the "suggested" is huge? Who made the original suggestion. It was an attempt to get an opinion piece portrayed as a news piece by quoting a guy giving an opinion.

Some other random person thinks those that think it can become a national "party" are deluding themselves. Which, ironically, seems to be geared to be a shot at Tea Partiers based on the implications and the tenor or the story however its primarily NON-Tea Partiers who are most commonly propogating the notion of some kind of national "Tea Party Party".

    So,

Tea Partiers are a republican leaning group spread over the country whose amount of influence is unknown at this point and likely can't become a national party even though there's no major legitimate attempts by the movement to become such.

Can I become a Blog writer by saying Water is Wet and George Carlin is Funny, because it seems like stating the obvious and what's pretty much already known is all it takes based on this "news" item.

I love when surveys tell me the patently obvious.

"A recent survey indicated that 17-year old boys think about sex a lot."
"A recent survey indicated that most Ellen viewers are female".
"A recent survey indicated that gay men are a key demographic for Cher".

The fact is, it's impossible to take the tea baggers seriously because the era of big government and huge deficits sure as hell didn't start in 2009. But I guess you cannot complain too loudly when the people responsible are members of your own party. Apparently, big government is only bad when you are not in charge of it.
Wow. Am I awesome or what?

    So true, so true. Sadly.

AUSTAN GOOLSBEE: I think the world vests too much power, certainly in the president, probably in Washington in general for its influence on the economy, because most all of the economy has nothing to do with the government.
