McConnell Softens, Says Agreement On Financial Reform Within Reach

Excerpted from “McConnell Softens, Says Agreement On Financial Reform Within Reach” By Brian Beutler, TPMDC, April 20, 2010, 2:53PM
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell struck a markedly different tone on financial regulatory reform today, suggesting an agreement could be struck with Democrats sooner rather than later. And Democrats have taken notice. …

McConnell credited his own efforts to unite the Republican caucus in opposition to the bill as it stands for sparking a breakthrough.

Democrats find this simultaneously annoying, but also promising. On the one hand, they say negotiations never stopped, and that they plan to bring the bill up as is, whether or not agreement is reached, early next week. …
Better late than never, Republicans are welcome.

So the question is will this be some actual cooperation or will McConnell just be labeled a RINO and get primaried?

No, he is just recognizing the Regressives have been outflanked on this issue.

Re: McConnell Softens, Says Agreement On Financial Reform Within Reach

“I think it's important to continue between the two principals on the committee, because that's where it's likely to happen. But if not then we'll take things as they come. We'll take the next step.” — Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-ME)

Ultimately, there really were some responsible Republican Senators who intended to support real financial reform and we should be grateful for that.

Excerpted from “Why The GOP Suddenly Let Up On Financial Reform” By Brian Beutler and Christina Bellantoni, TPMDC, April 21, 2010, 3:18PM
Key Republicans, sincere about passing new rules for Wall Street, but intimidated by the notion of blocking financial regulatory reform, let it be known to their leadership that, at some point, they would side with Democrats to break a filibuster. Maybe not on round one, or even round two. But eventually. …

You have to give the Republican political operatives some credit on this one, they did not step into an obvious trap well set up by the Democrats. The tow the line on this one and they actually look cooperative and responsible. This puts the issue quietly to bed and live to battle another day when the political winds may be more favorable. Well played!

Pity, I was looking so forward to the FOX talking points machine feeding many of the posters here. I was wondering how many here were going to try to defend the investment banks.... Oh, well, this thread is silent and we will likely have very few additional words on this one....

Apparently I over-estimated the intelligence of Republicans. They are in fact fillibustering, not the bill itself, but the right to even discuss the issue. Unbelievable. I thought they were smarter than this. Forgive my lack of judgment.
