Especially in NOLA, it's the biggest union area here. People seem to forget that this state has been heavily progressive/Democrat since the late 1800's. While we did swing red recently, there are still quite a few areas that are solid blue.
Not as a group anyway. Everyone has nutcases, but the right is pretty well behaved here.

The Repulicans were more statist, but the Democrats were in no way conservative, never have been. As a matter of fact, Jim Crowe was unpopular amongst businesses because they wanted the expanded customer bases but surprise surprise the Dems wanted to enforce their ideas of what society should have been. The minimum wage as well was instated because black children were outcompeting white kids for jobs by working for less, the Democrats fixed that though and made a minimum requirement specifically to take that advantage of monetary leverage away, proactive economic punishment by law is uniquely liberal. First gun control, Democrats, so that slaves and newly free men and women couldn't take up arms against the white owners/later former owners. The Ku Klux Klan was founded as an anti-Catholic, anti-minority group and guess what, Robert Byrd, very liberal was a proud member. You lose.
I never feel bad when they get what's coming to them, like a back alley beating or sudden removal from the gene pool.
