We are a Christian Nation....

What is your proof we were built on Christianity?

Don't give me that "Well almost all of our founding fathers were christians and said christian stuff in their writings!!"

Because that holds true only if I can run around saying that my House was one built on Islam just because the crew who built it happened to all be Muslims.

He also believes that we are a "white country" because all of the founding fathers were white.

And this brings me back to my original question..

What is the significance of what religious majority happened to be in charge when we were founding our nation. What does that have to do with today?

Nobody has bothered to explain it.

I can make an attempt at your question. It seems to me that Americans expect our leaders to be Christian because of our countries history. I mean look how upset people get with the idea that President Obama maybe a Muslim (which I don't think he is by the way). And you can read what people say about how we have to return to fearing God and get back to our good Christian values. To me that is what it has to do with today.

what about muslim values, or sihk values, budhist values, hindu values, atheist values, individual values?

and thats why your country was founded as secular, as to accomodate all people.
what is it you have written within your big statue?
"Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door"

Contrary to what many of our left wing friends believe:

78% Think Jesus Christ Rose from the Dead

78% Think Jesus Christ Rose from the Dead - Rasmussen Reports

Today's the day Christians believe Jesus Christ was resurrected from the dead, and 78% of Americans share that belief.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that just 10% don't believe Christ rose from the dead, and another 11% are not sure.
you might be taken a little more seriously if you didn't preface every post you make with uncalled for remarks about what "the left" believes.

for the record, we are a nation of many religiions, christianity being but one.

Thank you for stating the obvious Cap'n. :doh Everyone knows that around 75% of Americans identify as Christian. But there are zillions of denominations of Christianity, and not all Christians are as fundamentalist as others. Some people will say that going to church twice a year (Easter and Xmas) makes them a Christian.

The far-right rabid fundamentalists probably make up less than 5% of the US population. Even lots of people I know who attend fundamentalists churches (for God knows what reason) don't actually live out those insane doctrines.

Christianity is more of just a social clique than anything else for the vast majority of Americans.

I am not saying I agree with what I wrote. I was just trying to explain to Caine about why the idea of the U.S. being a Christian nation is so important. I personally could care less what values we were founded on as long as they weren't forced upon me.

Provide proof of those statements.

They tended to wear hose and wigs too. Perhaps we are a transvestite nation?

Slow down a bit, so you are saying we are a nation of White Christian Transvestite Men?

Genius.

Don't forget the drug abuse back then though. Very rampant, I wouldn't be surprised if a good chunk of the founders were drug users.

LOL...but you thought it was perfectly fine when your "Great and Inspired World Leader" was kissing up to the Bin Laden family and in bed with all his oil buddy Saudi's.

As usual you jump in feet first on a subject you seem to be ignorant about.....Far as I am concerned there is really nothing wrong with the Bin Laden family.......Its OBL whom the family has disowned that is the problem....Again you blame a whole family for the actions of one member.......Sad

One way you can tell my left wing friend that in this country the Christian God is mentioned everywhere from our money to the Pledge even in the lobby of the SCOTUS....Prior to convening every morning the Congress led by a Christian minister say a prayer before beginning work......

It is ridiculous to say this is not a Christian nation.......

It is ridiculous to say this is a Christian nation when there are official documents like the Treaty of Tripoli stating that we are not.

The Christian God? I don't recall the currency specifying which God it was referring to. Not to mention the fact that it wasn't instilled until the McCarthy era. Regardless of all of this, the fact that we celebrate freedom of religion is very telling. If we were a truly Christian nation, everyone would be a Christian and we wouldn't have religious freedom.

So, your point is we are a nation of hypocrites then?

Because we sure do not act like Jesus. How many people did Jesus torture? When did Jesus say that helping the poor was a communist plot? How many innocent people did Jesus kill to control their resources? Did Jesus defend the money changers? Did Jesus shun those whose sexual preferences were not the same as his own?

Sadly that is true my left wing friend I am with sin but I cite the words of out lord and savior Jesus Christ when a harlot was about to be stoned to death said and I paraphrase "Let you without sin cast the first stone"

Think about it my left wing friend.........

This is what slightly bugs me. Much of the Christian Comments and Symbols used by the government were put into use in the 1950's in response to the Red Scare, trying to separate ourselves from the Communists in every way we could, no matter how stupid it was to do so on some things.

Don't hijack this thread like you usually do my left wing friend.......No one commenting in this thread believes that........

I just tell the truth.......

How do you explain the examples I cited, especially the prayer by congress?

It bugs me too. People used to cling tightly to religion during the Red Scare, lest they be considered a Communist. It's sad that there are still people who cling to this absurdly paranoid ideal.

So your going to ignore official documents explicitly saying that we are not a Christian Nation over what Congress personally and unofficially did before each work day?

Congress also drank Tea during that time. Does that mean our nation was founded upon tea? Your connecting dots that aren't actually connected.

How do you explain the examples I cited, especially the prayer by congress?

A variety of prayers are given at the start of the session, including Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist. Its not just Christian prayers.:shock::shock:

Sure they do. If you went back and followed the thread. He was arguing that since the majority, if not all, of the founding fathers were Christian, we are therefore a "Christian Country".

The same logic would follow that since they were all white/male. We are therefore a "White male Country".
