No, they decided it was more combatants and fired. What did they base that decision on? Nothing. Watch the video again.

BTW, since when do we target the unarmed and wounded? There were no weapons visible in or near the van nor on the people who exited the van. It was a bad engagement.

Didn't they get permission to engage these people?

Well, yes and no. They were talking to someone on the ground; either the leader of the ground force, or the forward observer. But that individual could not see what they were looking at.

Generally, Helo pilots are cleared to engage without some type of higher authority permission vice the ground unit they are supporting.

Re: Leaked footage from Apache showing "US military slaughter" in Baghdad

This is a well written explanation of some of the situation: PolitiFact | Gates said leaked military video of shooting in Iraq doesn't show the broader picture of Americans being fired upon

According to a military review completed five days after the incident, soldiers in that company "had been under sporadic small arms and rocket propelled grenade fire since" the operation -- described as "clearing their sector and looking for weapons caches" -- began at dawn that morning.

That comports with the detailed reporting from David Finkel, a Washington Post journalist who was embedded for eight months with the battalion in question, and who described the events that day in his book, The Good Soldiers.

"All morning long, this part of Al-Amin had been the most hostile," Finkel wrote. "East Al-Amin had been filled with gunfire and some explosions. There had been reports of sniper fire, rooftop chases, and rocket-propelled grenades being fired at Bravo Company, and as the fighting continued, it attracted the attention of Namir Noor-Eldeen, a twenty-two year-old photographer for the Reuters news agency who lived in Baghdad, and Saeed Chmagh, forty, his driver."

Sorry but you won't get that from me based on Gates' apologetics when we have video and audio.

Is there no possible way for said video and audio (which I have not seen/heard, btw) to be interpreted in such a way that you would support the soldiers actions?

Or at the least, give them the benefit of the doubt, that they, under the combat conditions in place at the time, made a decision they thought fit within the boundaries they were given?

Or have you already decided they purposefully attacked something which they should not have?

An unmarked van picking up insurgents and weapons in a combat situation. Those were the criteria they made their decision on. And it was the correct decision to make.

BTW, since when do we target the unarmed and wounded? There were no weapons visible in or near the van nor on the people who exited the van. It was a bad engagement.
You target insurgents and any unmarked veichles involving themselves in the fight. It becomes a valid target when the driver decided to render aid to the enemy.

The Apache is there to provide support and protection for ground troops. It does that by engaging insurgents from a distance so that the troops don't have to.
The more you kill, the less the ground troops have to expose themselves to. As a wise Sargent once told me, the definition of a fair fight is one where the other guy is outnumberd out gunned and has nowhere to run. One should always try to make sure its a fair fight....
