    She's currently 5 so no I haven't.

In regards to her parents, yeah. My personal view, I'm not big on the whole victimization thing. I generally won't call someone a "retard" however I'm also not going to ignore that "retarded" as an adjective for "mentally slow" or essentially stupid doesn't exist.

My best explanation for this is actually a recent south park episode concerning the word "faggot", and that the meanings and use of a word change over time despite their roots. When someone says something is being retarded they're tending not to mean "You're acting like a mentally handicapped person" or "you're acting like someone with downs syndrome" it generally mens "you're acting stupid". I'm one of those "intent" type of people when it comes to words.

Thanks. I'm kind of giving up on it myself, but I think the point needs to be made now and then.
NP You made the request politely which I can respect, and I believe in a way that I imagine if a discussion was being had about the word itself and its use you wouldn't fly off the handle if people dare to type it out.

Did you ask them what they thought? Do you ever use the term in front of them?

Me too. I know what you mean. But I think you're completely mistaken if you think people aren't referring directly to the mentally retarded when they use the word. What else could it possibly be? Ask them what it means, and 99% will probably say "you know, retarded, like a retarded person." That's exactly what it means.

Now, I know not everyone is like that. Some are just conditioned to say it and have never once thought about it. And there are certainly words I use that were once official medical labels, such as "idiot." So you're right some of the time.

Most important - and this is the kicker for me - ask someone with mental retardation if it hurts when they hear people say it. They will almost always say yes.

Now, I'm with you on the South Park thing - I want a world where people can say "retarded" and it's okay, because underneath it all there is respect for retarded people that goes without saying. I think being able to joke and laugh about yourself and others is the best form of inclusion. But we're not there yet.

NP You made the request politely which I can respect, and I believe in a way that I imagine if a discussion was being had about the word itself and its use you wouldn't fly off the handle if people dare to type it out.
Yeah, I've learned how to do it right. And I don't even care as much any more. It's just too common. I think I'm just giving up and going with the movement to abandon the label "mentally retarded" for people who actually qualify. It feels like giving in, but it's a hopeless cause. Of course, people will just start using the new term ("intellectual disability") as an insult, but that's a fight for another day.

Thanks for listening and taking it seriously instead of flying off the handle in response too.

What a dumb cluck. Are those birthers going to replace his income, retirement, offer him a job after his stint at Camp Levin-Pound-A-Rock.

Just another example proving that all officers are not the sharpest tool in the shed.

And the really stupid part of this is that even if Obama's was born outside the U.S. he would still be eligible to be president. This wasted act is akin to a soldier diving on a grenade... when nobody is around. What a waste.
Thank You Barack Obama for Restoring Honor To The Presidency.

I'm wondering if they're misplaced though. You do know even if president Obama wasn't eligible Larkin still had no case and would be court martialed.
