Oklahoma accidentally voted to strip some protections based on race and religion because they cited the wrong statute.

They were trying to remove those protections based on sexuality - Oklahoma doesn't want to abide by the recent federal change that adds sexuality-based hate crimes to the list. They cited the wrong statute and accidentally stripped some protections based on race or religion.

The bill in question prevents local law enforcement from sharing any information with the feds about a hate crime if Oklahoma does not recognize the crime as a hate crime. So, if someone commits a religious hate crime in Oklahoma right now, they are legally barred from sharing information with the feds.

Why they would want to remove this protection from homosexuals is beyond my powers of imagination.

Any possibility that they meant to strip the protection based on race or religion so that minorities and Muslims or non-Christians don't get these protections, but they didn't want to come right out and say that they don't think minorities should receive these protections?

Just a thought.
 
Their motivation was entirely wrong, but I am against the concept of hate crimes in general so I can't really complain about the result. Its also damned pathetic that they could screw up and nuke the wrong part.

I think that all crimes should be investigated without concern for whether it was a hate crime or not.

Exactly. I'm against hate crime legislation because not only does it create obvious shades of gray with regards to crime, but also because it can create a very slippery slope with categories you give people. The Los Angeles Police Department caught and subdued a man that was high on crack, being belligerent, and evading police. You know him as Rodney King. One problem - the wild, evading cokehead was black, and boom - hate crime. People don't see the circumstances of a situation, only the inconsequential factors. If a gay guy picked a fight with me and I whipped the piss out of him, immediately I'm a gay basher in the court of public opinion.

That is a load of right wing bs.

A hate crime very well defined. If you are targeted because of your race, religion or sexuality then it is a hate crime. If you happen to be black or jewish or gay while committing a crime then it is not a hate crime, unless the person arresting you beats the **** out of you because that you are black, jewish or gay. In Rodney Kings case, he was getting arrested because of a possible crime, but that in no way justified the beat down he got.. in no way. That had to be motivated by some sort of hatred.. question is .. was it because he was a crackhead or black.. or both.

All this shows, is that the right wing in the US and even in Europe do not want to stop marginalising and hating people based on colour, race, religion or sexual orientation. Considering they are supposedly the defenders of freedom and liberty.. then it is highly hypocritical not only to allow out right discrimination based on race, colour, religion and sexual orientation but actually promote the practice.. Pathetic.

The right and especially the religious right, are a bunch of homophobic racist sexist biggots more than often when they defend getting rid of legislation like this. It is not even 60 years ago the US was divided down racial lines for god sake.. that does not change over night so yes the legislation is very warranted in the US and around the civilized world.
 
well, they did by accident what they should have done on purpose. Hate crime laws should all be revoked anyway. People shouldn't receive preferential treatment for being a member of a particular group. A crime should not be more heinous just because it happened to someone who is a member of a certain group. All that should matter is that it happen to a PERSON. One group of people isn't any more special than another.

That said, I'm with Riv and rathi. If someone stabs someone because they're black and someone stabs someone because they got a beef with him, then guess what...

You have two people who performed assault with a deadly weapon.

Lets say you have a black and white guy in a drunken fight and in the middle of the spat the white guy calls the black guy the N word. Then you have another drunken fight between a black and white guy and in the middle of the spat the white guy calls the black guy a Mother****er. Is it right the first guy could have a much higher penalty based on the defendant claiming that the drunken brawl was motivated by race simply because he threw out the slur, when its likely a drunken guy throwing out insulting terms to a guy he's fighting with and not that different intent wise from the person saying mother****er.

A crime is a crime. While I think mitigating factors can potentially put it lower or higher on the scale that crime has associated with it I don't believe there should be this magical tacted on additional penalty. If you feel assault motivated by race is more serious than one motivated because a guy hit on someones girl then give the guy doing it on race a penalty closer to the maximum and the other guy something more in the middle of the road. What you don't need is an entirely extra charge or addition placed on top of it.

As long as the removed hate crimes protections for everything I could care less if it was a accident or on purpose. Being a member of a particular group should not get you any extra benefits, punishments or extra justice under the law. the next thing they need to get rid of race based hiring preferences called affirmative action. Hate crimes laws, affirmative action and any other similar laws should be struck down.

Oh no I guess if you are not a racial/ethnic minority,gay,religious minority or what ever else I guess you can't speak out against racist laws and other similar laws.
