It will be interesting to read the ENTIRE Document of this so called arms limitation agreement.
That is assuming Obama and his cohorts release this 5000 page agreement!

Not enough warheads, we need more.

What a gift to the Russians. This deals allows Russia to maintain parity with the US while retiring large numbers of weapons that it cannot maintain or replace.

Now that Obama has made this strategic concession...I wonder what Russia goes for next. They goota believe that Obama is a fool. Obama believes he's cementing relations with Russia...meanwhile, with out SecState in Moscow, Russia is announcing it's intention to help Iran complete construction of nuke plants...

    Obama was played.

This 'START' is hysterical. Here are two powerhouse nations BS'n each other on warhead reductions by 30%. Both sides are bluffing. Does anyone really ASSume the US and Russia dont have secret stockpiles buried deep into the earth saved for a "rainy day"? Lol! We're not that stupid and neither is Russia.

1,550 each is more than enough to reduce the entire planet to a smoldering pile of rubbish.

This is like the vaguest conspiracy theory post I've seen in a while. What, you think it's secretly a treaty about INCREASING nuclear arms?

Re: 1550 warheads each: Details on new arms treaty from Lavrov, Gates

1550 warheads is PLENTY to destroy just about all life in the United States or Russia, and its MORE THAN ENOUGH for an effective deterrent. And since I doubt anyone is thinking the US and Russia are planning to go nuclear on each other any time soon, nuclear stockpiles over the effective deterrent are a waste, and I believe 1550 still could be cut down.

As to the idea that we or the Russians have "secret stockpiles" I highly doubt it. A nuclear weapon isn't something you just pull out from under your bed and use, it takes a lot of precision and trained individuals to move a warhead from storage, prepare it, and place it on a missile. Also both us and the Russians constantly sent groups over to the other country to monitor the disarmament, and they can go anywhere they want.

Nuclear arms reduction is good for everybody.

Too many people are missing the point:

The US just gave a massive concession. Russia could not maintain or replace their aging stockpile whicle the US could. We gave away something that would have happened on its own without US concessions.

And, now, Russia rightly sees that the US is willing to trade strategic options in exhange for the appearance of good relations.

We know this because even as Russia was agreeing to this, they were planning and then announcing to the world, with out SecState in Moscow, that it would assist Iran in completing nuke plant construction.

Meanwhile, while Russia is doing this, the US is condemning, not expressing concern as usual practice, but condemning Israel for building new homes in its capital.

Priceless diplomacy we have going on...

Russia is capable of maintaining a sufficient nuclear stock, and the treaty prohibits them from rebuilding any of those nukes, whether they are destroyed or lost through decay.
Also, nuclear warfare, is not a "strategic option" its suicide. I don't care if Russia only has 100, 50, 20, or 10 nuclear weapons capable of hitting the US, its still suicide to engage in a nuclear war. As for the United States, I hardly see a situation where the total use of our nuclear arsenal would be required, or even the single use of a nuclear weapon. The sole purpose of nuclear weapons is deterrence, they are not meant to be used. We have plenty to achieve deterrence, and other ways to achieve deterrence instead of completely relying on nuclear weapons.
As for these stories about Russia assisting Iran to build a nuclear reactor is total bunk, the story is about several Russian individuals who may be operating outside the approval of their government. Russia is NOT as official policy aiding Iran in building a nuclear reactor.
