FBI investigating Perriello incident in Virginia

CNN Political Ticker: All politics, all the time Blog Archive - FBI investigating Perriello incident in Virginia - Blogs from CNN.com

Days after his address was posted online by a Virginia Tea Party activist, the FBI and local law enforcement officials are investigating a "suspicious incident" at the home of Rep. Tom Perriello's brother.

A line to the propane tank on his brother's gas grill had been "severed," an aide to the Democratic congressman told CNN.
This is still under investigation and there has been no arrest made. However if this is true, it will be far worse than a rock being thrown through an office window in New York.

Politico reported Monday that a Tea Party activist in Lynchburg, angry over Perriello's vote in favor of health care reform legislation, had posted the address of Perriello's brother online and encouraged other activists to "stop by" and weigh in on the bill. The activist had apparently meant to post the congressman's home address but mistakenly published his brother's.
This, I feel, pretty much speaks for itself. It is one thing to have a principled disagreement over legislation, but its quite another to attempt to kill someone over it. This is shameful and a sad day for our society.

What are you talking about? That's how our country started. Not that I really endorse running around killing random people at this point. If you want to revolt, you have to make a harder stance than that. But I don't think revolution is quite yet justified. Hopefully people can get their emotions in check and start interacting in a positive manner to elicit change in the system.

If indeed this incident turns out to be politically based vandalism, yes it is a sad day. Even if it was vandalism not meant to kill, it's a dangerous game someone is playing. What right have they to threaten, or intend to threaten a duly elected representative?

What in the heck is going on in this country?

The funny thing is that if the "activist" had a brain in his head, he could have easily discovered the Congressman's real address on his own. It's not exactly privileged information, you know.

Anyway, I hope they arrest the man. Just as I've proposed stiffer penalties for all the liberals who break laws at protests, especially in front of the RNC, so should guys like this have to break rocks if they act crazy. Democrats don't have a complete stranglehold on acting like politically-motivated d-bags.

Yeah, so??? That doesn't mean it's right, for either side when pissed, to threaten people.

I didn't say it was. You asked what's happening to this country, not if what is happening is justifiable. And the answer is that people are getting pissed off. The government is inattentive to the needs and necessities of the common person and have acted against the People and for their pockets for a long time. The economic strife we currently live in exacerbates the situation even more. In the end, people get extremely pissed off at the government and its agents. It doesn't mean that anyone is particularly justified in their use of violence, but pissed off people tend to think emotionally rather than rationally. This type of stuff always happens when the government distances itself from the People for extended periods of time.

Interesting. So this guy wasn't supposed to notice the gas hose was not hooked up when he went to turn on the grill? That's kinda dumb.

[insert blanket condemnation of violence here]

It's the gang that couldn't shoot straight … they got the wrong Perriello.

[It's a shame you couldn't offer your own blanket condemnation of violence Coronado.]

And, maybe there's another more important observation than merely that these people appear to be utterly foolish in their misdeeds. And that is, when one attempts to victimize political opponents: the act itself reflects not on the character and politics of the target but rather that of the aggressor.

These recent acts bring discredit and disfavor to the opponents of health care reform; whatever merits their arguments may have had, they are brushed aside by the horror and dismay people feel towards these arbitrary acts of violence.

That in general relies entirely on which side wins.
