Re: What Biden Told Netanyahu Behind Closed Doors...

That's fine. Israel is a sovereign nation. In that case, they don't need the almost $3 billion in subsidies that we give them each year. Seems like a fair trade to me. We can screw off, and they can take care of themselves militarily and financially.
Thats what I said. The only problem for us in that case, would be a wide regional war, that would risk our interests. The money we spend on Israel gives us some power over Israeli foriegn policy. Basically we create a strong state, that acts as a buffer to wider war. If Israel was denied that funding it would feel even more threatend by its nieghbors which would result in worse conditions for the Palestinians, and potentially all out war. So it is in our interest to keep Israel stable, but if we feel so strongly about the anti American palestinians then that shouldnt be a concern to us .

But, as long as we are subsidizing them, and our relationship with them is compromising our ability to work with other middle eastern nations, then they shouldn't be telling us to bugger off.
Read above. Also dont forget that they are vital to our weapons development, and intelligence gathering.

I agree. Proposing a plan to demolish more Palestinian homes on the very day that our Vice President showed up on a diplomatic visit was an act that is hostile to our interests in the region, and should be taken as such.

That's the theory. In pragmatic reality, that has not been the case.

If Israel was denied that funding it would feel even more threatend by its nieghbors which would result in worse conditions for the Palestinians,
That's one possible outcome. Another is that Israel might have to come to terms with the Palestinian demands and be more of a peace-maker rather than a wall builder and home demolisher.

Read above. Also dont forget that they are vital to our weapons development, and intelligence gathering.
Feel free to prove this. I hear this all the time, but from where I sit, I see that we have multiple bases in the middle east that appear to position us much more effectively, and without the hassles that Israel's squabbles cause for us.

Well it has nothing to do with out interests, its a Israeli issue. What if Netenyahu came to NY during the Ratner take over of the Navy yard in Brooklyn? Should the Americans appologize for eminent domain? Your confusing our interests with interenal Israeli matters. The Palestinians should be of no concern to Biden.

That's the theory. In pragmatic reality, that has not been the case.
There hasnt been a majour war in that area since the funding began.

That wont happen, if you put Israel in the corner they will react aggressively.
The issues dont present a way toward peace. The Palestinians want too much and sometimes different conflicting things (Fatah/Hamas), and offer very little in exchange.

Feel free to prove this. I hear this all the time, but from where I sit, I see that we have multiple bases in the middle east that appear to position us much more effectively, and without the hassles that Israel's squabbles cause for us.
    Recent military cooperation:

    1. Arrow missle shield (developed in conjuction with US)
    2. Paladin tracking systems
    3. Lighter body armour

    intelligence

    Anti insurgent tactics
Intel that led to assasination of Al Queda leadership
(others things will come out as time goes by)

    That's just my take.
So let's see........... we cut off military aid to Israel forcing them to look elsewhere for the funds to keep their country safe.

Israel, having their own high tech military industries starts to sell those high tech weapons around the world to make up for the funds cut off by the US.

Israel tells the US to move their ass out of their country or start paying through the nose for rent on those military bases we need so desperately in the only ally we have in the ME.

You start bitching about the arms race the Israelis are fermenting and how they are endangering the fragile peace in the ME. by kicking our ass out or making us pay rent.

Let's face it, some people will never see the real world the way it really is. Sure Israel has a strong lobby in the US., but do you really think we pour that much money into Israel because of their lobby, or do you think it might be to support our own goals?

    That's just my take.

Israel is making a huge mistake here, but it comes on top of an even bigger mistake. The Arabs attempted to annihilate Israel as a nation, and instead, they had their butts handed to them, and lost land. If Israel had just annexed the land that they won fair and square, as the spoils of war, this problem would not even exist, and Israel would not be making the mistake it is making today.

At this point, how can some people refuse to admit that Israel is annexing land in an imperialistic fashion? It's plain as day.

I'm glad Biden spoke with some realism.

Israel was imperialistic because it wanted to survive. But as of 1967 their borders have shrunk not expanded. What they are doing today is building houses in Israeli territory, the Palestinians do not have a state. Unless the Palestinians become unified they will always be in a position of weakness, and never gain a state.

Israel announces this the day Biden arrives?!?

Obviously, Netanyahu doesn't respect the US. Either he takes our support for granted, or considers it irrelevant.

    Not good.

It is designed to embarras the Obama administration, the same administration that went to Cairo not Jerusalem to make a Mideast speech. The Israelis view this administration as anti Israel, so they are trying to destroy any chance of Obama having any politically beneficial foriegn policy achievements. They know they have a powerful lobby in our Congress, and they dont risk much but possibly gain.
