O’Reilly tells conservatives to stop ‘bashing’ Obama: ‘Does Obama bashing accomplish anything?’

Conservatives received a blunt word of caution from an unlikely source about their conduct at this week's annual CPAC convention.Right-leaning

Fox News anchor Bill O'Reilly said the conservative movement would be "making a big mistake" if it spends the weekend "bashing Obama

And you know what? O'Reilly is absolutely right. Americans don't want to hear how Obama is an illegal alien, or a Nazi, or a Socialist, or how he makes baby Jesus cry. They want to know how his programs are going to impact their bottom lines. But, the message of Obama's spending binge is being drowned out by the crazy and silly.

O'Reilly has a very good point, and it would behoove Republicans to listen to it, for their own good. Let's stop this silliness, and start getting real and honest.

Article is here.

I applaud O'Reilly for saying this, but until more conservative pundits say the same I will not get my hopes up. I do agree that their focus on stupid stuff like Presidnet Obama is a Muslim alien Socialist Fascist Kenyan hurts the legitimate issues in President Obama's policies, but I would like to see O'Reilly go more after other pundits. I mean they are helping with this craziness by continuing to go with these stupid stories.

Looks like O'Reilly's gone liberal.

Why? Because he said something that was dictated by common sense?

Common Dan, it's me. I was being cheeky.

I'm sure some of his loyal fans feel betrayed.

It always amazes me how Obama has managed to avoid criticism for his real mistakes yet get massive flak for stuff he didn't do. Lets take the bailout. You get all kinds of morons going on out socialist conspiracy this and nationalization of the economy that. You'd think the millions that were pissed away through mismanagement would be enough to go after him for. But instead of focusing on an important and valid criticism, it has to be some dramatic lunacy.

Alright, I can say I'm the first conservative to post in this thread. Whooohooo.

No, he wants to make sure he is one of the few still allowed to broadcast his show when talk radio is abolished. He's all in it for himself.

That is why he doesn't fight back and prove the misinformation people post about Obama because it makes them look into a past that isn't there. It's a good decoy.

And now... for a Conservative Response...

It's CPAC. It's a highly partisan, pure show, rally the base, fire up the faithul event. Part Threater, Part policy discussion and all for the true believers.

Part of that, is giving conservatives a venue to voice opinions and get people fired up. Lengthy discussions on the merits of the Conservative plans, and detailed disseminations of Obama's faults might make people like Dan and BillO happy, and feel it's a "non-partisan reach out to America" but it makes for a damned boring event.

Anyone that doesn't realize this is more concerned with feelings, and appearances then is really good for them. While yes, I agree if the conservative movement is only centered around personal attacks and innuendo against Obama, there is a problem. However, this is not the case. C-PAC is a specific event, it serves a specific purpose, and BillO needs to get a grip, get off his high horse kick back and maybe get laid. Relax guy.

And Dan, you might be inspired by a bunch of wonkish non-partisan policy discussion... if so, I advise you not attend, nor pay much mind to events not aimed at the likes of you. Maybe you should go to an Olympia Snowe speaking event...

*******Rallying the base is one thing. Winning by taking the non ideological center is another and while things are presently going our way it can change by November.

******* I've personally seen little of this gathering in D.C. - has Immigration been mentioned at all (??) because unless it's addressed the GOP has no future.

O'Reilly is not so bad. Sure, he is pompous and self-righteous, but in terms of the Fox News prime time lineup, he is definitely the most reasonable of the bunch. In fact, he is probably the only reasonable one of the bunch.

The bailout was Bush's doing. The stimulus package was Obamas under the recomendation of Bernanke.

As far as I can tell, there are some (not all) conservatives that for some reason believe that liberals are following some sort of planned conspiracy to fundamentally alter the fabric of the country. Try listening to Rush Limbaugh, hes constantly going on about this sort of thing.

I don't know where it comes from, my best guess is that it stems from people who, for some reason unknown to me, are unable to see liberals as reasonable human beings. So instead of two principled opponents who have different ideas, they see politics as normal people vs horrible degenerates. Unfortunately this sort of insanity seems to have invaded mainstream politics on the right with people such as Beck, Bachmann, and Limbaugh.

I am sure that the frenzy is good for the base, but the side effect is that it also attracts extremists and removes possibilities for rational discourse, common ground, and compromise. Just as one cannot negotiate with criminals, these people believe you cannot negotiate with liberals. Another side effect is that you also lose the ability to criticize policy, instead you spend your time criticizing whole ideologies.

I don't pretend to understand it, but that's how it looks from my perspective at least.

You act as if CPAC speeches aren't available for quote or broadcast.

Ann Coulter made herself irrelevant thanks to a CPAC speech.

The president of Young Americans for Freedom (Young American Fascists, we called them in college) said, "Obama's notion of freedom is being able to snort cocaine."

How is that substantive? What does that accomplish? All it does is delegitimize the entire organization. It's cheap. It's petty. And now, it can be replayed when a Republican tries to run against him in 2012 (if said Republican was there - and several of them were).

O'Reilly is right. And I can't believe I'm saying that.

Is that the same guy who got booed by the audience for condemning CPAC for allowing a conservative gay rights group GOProud to speak?

There were also people cheering in that moment. You could hear them in the clip.

The GOP is fractured because of these far right ideologues. If the conference had a more centered approach, it would appear more balanced. Instead, the media is just going to focus on the loons and that is all the public is going to see coming out from the GOP. It's a shame really. There are some really good policy analysts in the GOP, but they are overshadowed by the neo-cons.

What we saw coming out of CPAC is why the GOP is not ready to lead the U.S. after the next election.

Don't stick your nose up at me.

There's a good amount of legitimate thoughtful criticism on the Sunday morning shows, from columnists, and in editorials.

Why don't you hear it from anchors on CNN or the nightly news? Well, that's the News; they're not supposed to editorialize (the way FNC does).

Though CNN has plenty of pundits/panels etc who comment on the pros/cons of particular policy point.

Also, there's been a good amount of criticism from the left on Geithner and handling of AIG. What has become all too apparent is the massive amount of push back the banking industry is capable of.

If the Tea Party had any sense, they'd be marching on K street.

The IRS is not our enemy. The Lawyers/Lobbyists handing legislators their policy papers every hour of every day are killing any chance of real meaningful reform of the laws/regs in the banking and finance industry.

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results

***** Brian Williams of NBC doesn't editoralize however in 2008 he had no difficulty in being a defacto Emcee of Obama's 2 big rally- one in Berlin:shock:and a later one (huge event) in St.Petersburg, Florida. It was staged beautifully with Obama and Brian walking out like it was the arrival of a Savior. Never had the line been crossed like that.

I hate O'Reilly and think he is a dumbass but I got to give him credit for saying this.

I guess you like him because he seems to lean toward the left. Now, he didn't do that when Bush was President, but since Obama is in office, and there is talk of bringing back the Fairness Doctrine, then now he is all of a sudden changing his political stance. Don't trust anybody like that.
