US hopes for Europe bank data dashed

Members of the European parliament have voted down a deal to transfer financial records belonging to EU citizens to America. For once the battle between security and privacy ended in favour of the latter.

Unbelieveable, now the socialist Obama govt wants data on EU citizens.

Not so, what they wanted are details of American citizens who are holding accounts in EU Banks.
However in my opinion the EU are quite correct in refusing the US unfettered access to EU Bank account holders.

Actually the process was started under Bush. At first Bush wanted sexual orientation and religion also plus other personal data. That was quickly dismissed.

I am glad the EU parliament dismissed this, however I believe it does not matter since the EU and governments agreed and signed the agreement before the Lisbon treaty came into power, a Lisbon treaty granting parliament the power to say no to such a treaty..

The US has had access to this data since 9/11 when the Bush administration demanded it. All that has happened now, is that the agreement has been put on paper.
