One of Russia's biggest helicopter manufacturers is starting a new batch of production. Hundreds of internationally acclaimed models have already been ordered from abroad. Russian choppers are occupying the skies above more than 30 countries. But Russia plans to go further, quadrupling its share of the world market within the next five years.

It is to be hoped that the build quality of these aircraft surpasses the build quality of previous Russian built aircraft.

What's wrong with previous Russian helicopters?

Hence my question... Russian helicopters are known as the tanks of the sky, nearly unbreakable and easy to fix when broken.. /shrug.. that to me is quality.

Never heard that.

Unless a Stinger missile flies into one :) .

Well it's true. Ruskies build some good helicopters.

Submarines? Not so much.

The Mil Mi 24 for example heavily armoured and large amounts of weaponry

Able to take 23 mm rounds and survive

The thing flew apart when struck by a stinger. It made it more resistant to small-arms fire, but armor can turn on you and become a massive drawback later on in the conflict.

Mil Mi-24 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Not much can survive if struck by a freaking stinger.. gezz.

But then again at least it is a stinger taking down these, instead of sand that grounded the Apache in the Gulf at the start :)

Wow a weapon designed to take the helicopter down works? Thanks for pointing that out.

Certain soviet helicopter models only had several hundred hours of flight until they needed repair. Anyways Russians had the first mass produced helicopter, so they have quite a legacy, these copters look badass too.

Yes, in some places it can, it others it can't.

Dubious comparison considering they did fly in the same environment.

The MI-8 and MI-17 ships are still being bought and reconditioned in nations all over the globe. I know, we do the night vision instrumentation for these older ships. They look brand new after the rebuild.

I'm sure many nations that have flown the older aircraft would buy the MI-24 without a second thought.

And any other helicopter wouldn't?
You are right though. The Apache is the best helicopter.

The Westland version that is......

They have a legacy for doing certain jobs where other means don't work. As for attack and warfare, they were never known for that.

I can point out to the general lack of quality in most of the things produced by Russia's Military Industrial Complex, but that's just too easy.

You can share the lolipop with Alvin :) .

And you know this how?

They re engined it with a roles royce. - about 11% more torqe. It can operate in arctic conditions, the MDD Apache can't . From Royal Navy vessels. The MDD doesn't. All of them are equipped with Longbow. The US doesn't ship longbow to Afghanistan. They slapped on the latest Isreali counter measures system. The MDD doesn't have an equivelant. They carry slightly more ordnance.

The British bought into the Apache in the middle of it's life. Took the current version and upgraded the hell out of it.

Normally I wouldn't mention something like this, but the suggesgion that the Russians don't build good helicopters is just too silly.

It's not just the fact that it would blow up, but rather how easy it was to acquire the target and take it out. It could fly, sure, but when it came for combat, it was a piece of ****, far too easy to track (side exhausts without cooling weren't exactly... ideal.)
