NY Senate Bill 4779, allowing kids to okay vaccines, creates controversy among ideolo

Some of the public discourse is represented below. The various angles include: Libertarians who oppose this bill as a way to take choice of health care from parents and give that choice to the medical industry, educators and vaccine manufacturers; Parents who want to protect their rights to guide their children’s choices and health care; Education advocates who see vaccines as a probable cause of learning disabilities and autism, who do not want mass vaccinations of children; Pro-life/anti-abortion advocates who believe that the government should not condone children having sexual intercourse; Pro-choice advocates who believe the bill is needed to give young people realistic, sexual information and medical attention to keep them protected from STD’s.

Hmm...depending on their age, I wouldn't necessarily have a problem with this. If a child has parents who believe the anti-vaccine nonsense, and they're old enough to have their own opinion (probably 14 or 15), I say go for it. For the younger kids, unfortunately they're mostly subject to the whims of their irresponsible parents, unless a court actually rules that the parents are neglecting their child's health.

The parents should be notified of what happens, but they should not have the right to block vaccinations if their kids want them. The minors right to health is more pressing than parental autonomy.

If their right to make healthcare decisions for themselves outweighs that of their parents, they are not children any longer.

Yeah, when they pay their own insurance premium.

Excuse me, did you read it? No age limit, so don't derail things here.

Excuse me, but did you read my post? I said *I* wouldn't necessarily have a problem with it depending on their age.

The article said nothing about insurance premiums. Therefore by your logic you are derailing the thread by commenting on something not specifically mentioned in the article.

Frankly the anti-vaccine pseudoscience is frightening and is making our country less healthy. It has absolutely no basis in fact. None.

Let's see you prove that no one has been hurt by vaccines.

Re: NY Senate Bill 4779, allowing kids to okay vaccines, creates controversy among id

Okay, I've read both bills pertaining to this issue, S4779 and A6702. As I understand it they're about the treatment and prevention of sexually transmitted diseases in minors. It would allow young teens who are sexually active to obtain vaccines against sexually transmitted diseases, such as the HPV vaccine. I have zero problem with this. If they can walk into a NY Family Planning clinic and have an abortion without parental knowledge, I see no reason why they can't request a vaccine against a sexually transmissible disease.

It doesn't say that health practitioners will go around systematically vaccinating kids all over the state. It says that, when the kids visit a healthcare center, physicians can administer the vaccine without the parents knowing about it. Again, if they can obtain birth control, get treatment for a sexually transmitted disease or get an abortion, all without parental knowledge, I don't see any reason why they can't get a vaccine.
