    No joke: South Carolina now requires ísubversivesí to register

    File this one under Humorous, folks:

    Terrorists who want to overthrow the United States government must now register with South Carolina's Secretary of State and declare their intentions -- or face a $25,000 fine and up to 10 years in prison.
    Yes, you read that correctly. Terrorists must now declare their intentions before committing terrorist acts. I am sure that will keep the nation safe..... except for one little problem. What terrorist has ever told authorities that they were planning to detonate a bomb, before they detonated the bomb?

    So, one day, Ahkmed walks into the courthouse, and up to the filing counter. He fills out the paperwork, stating his intentions to bomb the very same courthouse the next day, then pays his five bucks and walks out. OOOOOOOOOKaaaaaaay.

    I just changed my mind. Don't file this under humorous. File it under Dumb and Dumber, although nothing is going to prevent you from laughing your ass off in the meantime.

    Article is here.

    Oh the bureaucracy has finally come up with a solution to domestic terrorism. It's over. Declare the wars victorious. Legislation ftw.

    I live in SC, and this is the first I've heard of it. No mention of it that I've seen on FoxCarolina, any newspapers, talk radio, or etc, nor any locals talking about it.

    If true, it must have been some kind of "midnight legislation" that wasn't exactly trumpeted from the Statehouse steps.

    Like many things done by government, it typically has more to do with perceptions and money than justice. Politicans can say they voted for an anti-terrorism bill...and IF there's ever any terrorists caught in SC, they can be fined a nice little chunk of money and the state can make national news by insisting they serve their 10 year prison term in SC.

    Yeah, it's a bunch of BS, but no stupider than the laws of many states.

    From the article:

    While the intention of the law is apparently aimed at Islamic terrorists, it's unclear in the law's wording whether it can be applied to right-wing militias, some of whom have reputedly called for the overthrow of the US government. The law states that "fraternal" and "patriotic" groups are exempt from the law, but only if they don't "contemplate the overthrow of the government."

    While the law is clearly redundant -- there are plenty of statutes at the state and federal level through which terrorists can be prosecuted -- it reflects a not-uncommon pattern in some states of "doubling down" against particular crimes.

    For instance, South Carolina is among those states which require drug dealers to declare their illegal income, or face additional criminal penalties on top of the already established penalties for buying, possessing and selling drugs.
    This "doubling down" thing is seen in all states and jurisdictions, and frankly I think it is ridiculous. A guy sticks up a Lil Cricket, and he's charged with Armed Robbery...but he was a felon in possession of a gun, so now we add a Fed gun charge...and the State has a similar felon/gun law so he gets charged with that TOO... and he used a racial epithet to the cashier so now he's charged with a Hate Crime.

    Just a smidge ridiculous, methinks.

    S.C. Code of Laws Title 23 Chapter 29 Subversive Activities Registration Act - www.scstatehouse.gov-LPITS
    (1) "Subversive organization" means every corporation, society, association, camp, group, bund, political party, assembly, body or organization, composed of two or more persons, which directly or indirectly advocates, advises, teaches or practices the duty, necessity or propriety of controlling, conducting, seizing or overthrowing the government of the United States, of this State or of any political subdivision thereof by force or violence or other unlawful means;
    If a religious group wants God to take over control of the government then they have to register. Anyone making a movie involving the overthrow of the government has to register. Anyone playing the board game "Risk" has to register.
    (2) "Organization subject to foreign control" means every corporation, society, association, camp, group, bund, political party, assembly, body or other organization, composed of two or more persons, which comes within either of the following:

    (a) it solicits or accepts financial contributions, loans or support of any kind directly or indirectly from, or is affiliated directly or indirectly with, a foreign government or a political subdivision thereof, an agent, agency or instrumentality of a foreign government or political subdivision thereof, a political party in a foreign country or an international political organization
    Any organization that accepts money or support from anyone affiliated with a foreign government has to register. This would include most international charity organizations.
    or (b) its policies, or any of them, are determined by or at the suggestion of, or in collaboration with, a foreign government or political subdivision thereof, an agent, agency or instrumentality of a foreign government or a political subdivision thereof, a political party in a foreign country or an international political organization;
    Any organization whose policies are affected by any foreign government has to register. This could include any company that does business internationally.
    SECTION 23-29-60. Registration of members of subversive and foreign-controlled organizations.

    Every member of a subversive organization, or an organization subject to foreign control, every foreign agent and every person who advocates, teaches, advises or practices the duty, necessity or propriety of controlling, conducting, seizing or overthrowing the government of the United States, of this State or of any political subdivision thereof by force or violence or other unlawful means, who resides, transacts any business or attempts to influence political action in this State, shall register with the Secretary of State on the forms and at the times prescribed by him.
    And every person who is a member of any of the above who does any business in South Carolina, whether they live there or not, has to register. Next time I drive to Florida I'm going through Tennessee.

    I figured it was something like the marijuana tax stamp nonsense. I wish there was a good way to challenge a charge like that, since crap like that just makes a mockery out of the law.

    I bet there's a Monty Python sketch about this somewhere ...

    it does sound pretty funny, but i rather suspect the intent is to provide another method of ensuring that, if captured, said terrorists go to jail for longer.
