Is US bullying Toyota on recall?

I've been thinking that this is being made a huge deal about to help U.S. automakers. That has been my gut feeling on hearing the over-coverage of this story.

But Toyota has factories here in the US and tons of US employees. I would be absolutely disgusted if there was any intent to help American automakers by going after Toyota.

i disagree. gm got a ton of coverage last april for the fire problem recall.

They add up, though. If this is a continuing issue with Toyota, they'll be slammed. Two major ones in a short period of time can stick around for a while, but if they don't screw up for a while, then they'll come though it alright with minimal losses.

At the same time, right now Ford's gaining momentum on everybody, not just Toyota. This type of thing might be enough to nudge them just enough to push them to the top of the heap.

They've got a lot of things going for them right now, and this falter from Toyota might be something they can take advantage of, just as Toyota took advantage of GM faltering to claim the top spot in 2008. Or Ford's faltering earlier in the the decade to surpass them in 2007.
Ford is the only American automaker that didn't take money. :applaud I owned a 2000 Expedition and it did pretty well. It developed a few problems here and there, but I would still consider a Ford.

Exactly. That's why I think they are the company most poised to take advantage of this.

Personally, I would buy a Ford or a Toyota without too much worry, but I'll absolutely never buy another GM again (and this was decided well before the bail out).

i have a 2 gm cars that have never given me any trouble.

there are several great models out now that are starting to sell very well.

Or the Ford/Firestone recall.
I got new tires for my Expy from that. That was identified as a certain tire plant that did not normal employees in place due to a strike.

I've had my 99 Silverado 4x4 for a short time, so I can't say yet. It does have some issues like a leaking front stub shaft seal. I believe it was a flood car, but I bought it from my father who owned is since about 2001. There are rattles and squeeks in the cab.

I owned a Ford ONCE. Never again.

My last two GM's were nightmares. A 2002 and a 2007. The 2007 was in the shop 6 or 7 times within the first year and a half. I'm ecstatic I no longer own it.

I will say that one GM I owned was a good vehicle. A 1998 Chevy G3500 diesel van. It was part of the reason I bought the other ones, but the experiences with the other ones soured me on GM for good. Especially the 2007, which downright sucked.

But comparatively, from 1998 to 2002 to 2007 there was a noticeable decline in quality from my perspective.

I would potentially buy another G3500, though. It realy was a helluva workvan.

Absolutely the worst piece of crap vehicle I ever owned was a Toyota. Loooong before this series of problems came about, I swore I'd never own another, and I've been outstandingly pleased with that decision.

The Ford I bought to replace the Toyota that died on the LA's I-10 ran like a champ for 10 years. Never had one thing go wrong.

When I moved to the country, my much loved Ford couldn't quite handle all the hauling I do, nor take the rutted gravel roads and dangerous winter weather, so I traded it in for a nice used '99 Silverado Z71. It's been driven hard the last five years, and again, it's been an absolutely perfect vehicle.

Now that we're seeing increasingly worrisome (not to mention deadly) problems with manyToyota models, my negative feelings about Toyota - both the product and the company - have only solidified.

The story about floor mats smelled like so much crap to me when I first heard it years ago, and that stench hasn't dissipated in the slightest.

Honda Civic If You Asian Yo.

I think Honda is going to come out the big winner on this one.

I just got a 91 Accord LX for next to nothing. It runs like a champ and no rust. All I need to do is slap some paint on it and it will look like a new car.

I have never seen any American car hold up like this after 17 years.

Don't get me wrong though. I do like my Ford's. 2 Cobra's, 2 Taurus and 1 Ranger later, none of them held up as well as this Honda did.

You never will know the happiness of a Ford SVT vehicle. Absolutely awesome!

What model and year Toyota was it?

1982 Crapola SR5
One bad car doesn't make a reputation though. I've had tons of Toyotas without issues. But it happens.

Sure does. Happened to me. Soured me on them forever.

The scrambling for excuses that Toyota has been doing since 2007 just solidifies my bad feelings about them.

Of course, YMMV. :)

One vehicle does not make a trend. I wonder what J.D. Power says about reliability...

Ratings | J.D. Power

Toyota, 5 stars, along with Buick, Mercury and Jaguar. Not bad at all.

Is US bullying Toyota on recall?

Well of course Government Motors is going to bully it's competition to the fullest extent of it's ability; scaring away competition is the trade mark of fascism.
