Washington, DC -- January 28, 2010
Judicial Watch, the public interest group that investigates and prosecutes government corruption, announced today that it has obtained documents from the Air Force detailing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s use of United States Air Force aircraft for Congressional Delegations (CODELs). According to the documents, obtained by Judicial Watch through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), the Speaker’s military travel cost the United States Air Force $2,100,744.59 over a two-year period — $101,429.14 of which was for in-flight expenses, including food and alcohol. The following are highlights from the recent release of about 2,000 documents:

Speaker Pelosi used Air Force aircraft to travel back to her district at an average cost of $28,210.51 per flight. The average cost of an international CODEL is $228,563.33. Of the 103 Pelosi-led congressional delegations (CODEL), 31 trips included members of the House Speaker’s family.
One CODEL traveling from Washington, DC, through Tel Aviv, Israel to Baghdad, Iraq May 15-20, 2008, “to discuss matters of mutual concern with government leaders” included members of Congress and their spouses and cost $17,931 per hour in aircraft alone. Purchases for the CODEL included: Johnny Walker Red scotch, Grey Goose vodka, E&J brandy, Bailey’s Irish Crème, Maker’s Mark whiskey, Courvoisier cognac, Bacardi Light rum, Jim Beam whiskey, Beefeater gin, Dewars scotch, Bombay Sapphire gin, Jack Daniels whiskey, Corona beer and several bottles of wine.
According to a “Memo for Record” from a March 29—April 7, 2007, CODEL that involved a stop in Israel, “CODEL could only bring Kosher items into the Hotel. Kosher alcohol for mixing beverages in the Delegation room was purchased on the local economy i.e. Bourbon, Whiskey, Scotch, Vodka, Gin, Triple Sec, Tequila, etc.”
The Department of Defense advanced a CODEL of 56 members of Congress and staff $60,000 to travel to Louisiana and Mississippi July 19-22, 2008, to “view flood relief advances from Hurricane Katrina.” The three-day trip cost the U.S. Air Force $65,505.46, exceeding authorized funding by $5,505.46.
“Speaker Pelosi has a history of wasting taxpayer funds with her boorish demands for military travel. And these documents suggest the Speaker’s congressional delegations are more about partying than anything else,” said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton.

Judicial Watch previously obtained internal DOD email correspondence detailing attempts by DOD staff to accommodate Pelosi’s numerous requests for military escorts and military aircraft as well as the speaker’s last minute cancellations and changes.

It needs to stop. There is no legitimate reason she cannot fly commercial. And not in first class either. That goes for any government official other than the president, and he's only an exception because his job actually requires that he travel far and often--and he's a target.

If she wants to fly 1st class, she needs to pay out of her own dubiously earned salary like everyone else. Ditto if she wants a private jet.

i'm not so sure i agree. aren't there legitimate security reasons NOT to fly coach?

For the Speaker? Probably not.

Maybe she would take the issue more seriously if she actually did, huh?

No, I don't think so. There is already security at airports. If its good enough for ordinary folk then its good enough for her. Or any speaker, for that matter.

i guess you should have told president bush, then, he's the one who ordered military jets for the speaker, as a matter of security for 3rd in line.

i never thought it was a problem for the speaker to use military jets. that's a damned important position, whether you like the person or not.

Yeah, Bush made a mistake. Do you agree with him?

It is striking how pelosi really seems to go out of her way to abuse the privilege, well above and beyond her predecessor.

That's part of what us taxpayers paid for... alcohol and food.

I have no problem with Pelosi and a few of her immediate staff, say 4, traveling on air force jets. She is no different than the president of a corporation and I believe they have every right and the responsibility to travel as they do.

I DO have a problem with paying for food and alcohol for all of them. I also have a problem paying to fly Pelosi's or any other politician's family around the world and feed them. If they want to fly with Pelosi, they need to pay. It's not like she can't afford it.

I also find in funny and hypocritical that Pelosi and the other congress critters that she runs lambasting the CEOs of GM, Ford, and Chrysler for flying to Washington, D.C. for their meeting, then happily hopping on a plane Friday afternoon to go home at taxpayer's expense.

we did it for hastert, we've done it for many of them. this is just not a partisan issue. i agree they should be much more austere.

as for the hypocrisy, i sure don't see it.

It shouldn't be done for any of them.

You don't see the hypocrisy in blasting the CEOs for flying to Washington at their corporation's expense, yet happily flying all over the world with all their family and friends at our expense???????

The CEO's shouldn't fly around on the corporations jets because the corporations are broke. However Congress Critters should be able to fly around because..... wait a minute…… never mind. :3oops:

Compare those numbers to Hastert and get back to me. Oh, wait:

In fact, it appears that Pelosi uses military aircraft less often than her predecessor, former Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert.

The documents cover the period from January 2007 to November 2008 and show that Pelosi made the equivalent of 20 round-trips between Washington (Andrews Air Force Base) and San Francisco. That's an average of less than one round-trip per month. In contrast, former Speaker Hastert traveled home to his Illinois district virtually every weekend and, his former aides tell ABC News, he would almost always travel on military aircraft.

You think that the Speaker of the House, someone who is 3rd in line for the presidency, should be flying coach on commercial airlines?

I don't mind a bit of populism now and then, but this is going way too far.

What do you think important political officials do on flights? Watch movies? Read skymall? No, they handle ****. They discuss policy, make phone calls, etc. - all things that could not be done if they were flying commercial.

While it's certainly hypocritical for them to call out CEOs while they're doing the same thing, the solution is not to force them both to fly coach - it's to let them both do what they need to do.

Use your head - do you think that there might be a reason to have **** like that on a plane that will be used for the Speaker of the House to travel and meet with various domestic and foreign dignitaries? What should she offer the British Commerce Secretary - a Keystone Light and a handle of Georgi?

This type of petty nitpicking is pointless.

Re: House Speaker’s Military Travel Cost the United States Air Force $2,100,744.59 ov

I guess to keep it in perspective we would need to know the travel expenses of previous Speakers of the House. Is it more or less.
