AUSTIN -- Regardless of the outcome of the 2010 elections, whoever winds up in the governor's office next year will confront a monumental task as lawmakers strive to overcome a projected budget shortfall of at least $10 billion in a struggling economy.
Or have you completely confused the terms "surplus" and "shortfall?"

Huh. House of cards from which you argue.

I believe the one that is confused is you but that doesn't stop you from being condescending and wrong.

PolitiFact | Perry says Texas has a surplus in billions

TX however is now being hurt by the Obama economy just like every other state. TX has a part time legislature and no state income taxes yet is lagging behind other states in how badly they are being hurt by the recession.

People who'd rather watch the economy tank because it brings down Obama don't work for their money. Case in point: Conservative.
Why don't you grow up? My grandkids will love hearing that I am a kid just like them.

To believe I want the economy to tank to bring down Obama is nothing more than a typical lie which you are good at. The economy IS tanking however because of Obama. Had Obama put the right economic plan in place I would have supported it. Instead he has grown the size of govt. through a stimulus plan that has stimulated nothing but pet Democratic constituent groups.

Suggest you learn what the word projected means. TX Legislature meets every two years and it is two year budget that they put together. So far TX has a surplus but if the Obama economy continues to tank the state will have a deficit and will have to raise income OR cut spending. That isn't the case right now.

Just think how much worse shape Texas would be in without the $17 billion dollars they were awarded under the Stimulus funding. I guess they decided to wait till they've spent the federal stimulus money to secede.

Yep, TX is a hellhole, no state income taxes, the number one state in the nation in job creation, five of the top housing markets in the nation yet you would have Perry turn down the stimulus money that Congress passed and the President signed so that Obama can use that money elsewhere?

Brilliant comment on your part and totally ignores the reality. Why would TX turn down the money? Is that what you would do as Governor knowing that the money isn't going back to pay down the debt if you didn't take it?

Notice what Obama is doing with the TARP payback. Is that money going to pay down the debt that TARP created? No, Obama is going to use it for more govt. spending.

Right, typical hypocritical position of the Republicans regarding the stimulus money. They whine and moan about it while holding out their hand.

    Got it!

In the case of Texas, instead of projecting a $10 billion dollar shortfall, they would be projecting a $27 billion dollar shortfall, or cutting planned projects, services and state jobs.

Clearly you didn't read your own articles, but thanks for admitting you don't know what the term "surplus" means.

John O’Brien, director of the Legislative Budget Board, which advises legislators on budget matters, recently estimated that the current pace of spending will exceed incoming revenue by $11 billion by the time the 2012 fiscal year begins on Sept. 1, 2011.
It's amusing how you are claiming a rainy day fund, much of which was funded by prior year taxes counts as an annual budgetary surplus for the current fiscal year.

According to your logic, Texas, which faces a budgetary deficit of $10 billion has a surplus because a rainy day fund has $8.2 billion in it. Therefore, all states who are facing budgetary deficits actually have surpluses if their rainy day funds have a penny or more according to you.

Clearly, you have no understanding of basic finance or accounting.

    Note this:

Suggest you learn what the word projected means. TX Legislature meets every two years and it is two year budget that they put together.
Except that the projection of $10 billion deficit is for just next year. Or you are again not reading your own articles?

Btw, your own state comptroller, who's a Republican said this: "We believe that unemployment bottomed out in September."

Texas comptroller: Budget shortfall outlook overblown | News for Dallas, Texas | Dallas Morning News | Latest News

By the way, which is a larger number, $10 billion or $8.2 billion? If Texas took its entire rainy day fund to plug the hole, it would still be $1.8 billion in the hole.

I find it amusing how you think you are smarter but you can't even get basic math correct.

Why don't you grow up? My grandkids will love hearing that I am a kid just like them.
You act like one. And you do want the economy to tank to take down Obama. You are outright refusing to address how U6 went down because it blows your arguments out of the water. Hell, you are going out of your way to pretend U6 doesn't exist anymore despite you attacking Obama on it before!

Perhaps when you finally start earning money for yourself you'd figure it out.

Projections? You mean like the projected 1.6 trillion dollar deficit this fiscal year in the OBAMA Budget?

Why don't you address the real issue here, the failure of the Obama stimulus plan to stimulate anything but the deficit and pet Democrat constituents. Where are the jobs?
