Most Union Members Now Work for Government [edited]

Most government employees are unionized than the private sector. And you wonder why we are being screwed by the government
For the first time in American history, a majority of union members are government workers rather than private-sector employees, the Bureau of Labor Statistics announced on Friday.

In its annual report on union membership, the bureau undercut the longstanding notion that union members are overwhelmingly blue-collar factory workers. It found that membership fell so fast in the private sector in 2009 that the 7.9 million unionized public-sector workers easily outnumbered those in the private sector, where labor’s ranks shrank to 7.4 million, from 8.2 million in 2008.

“There has been steady growth among union members in the public sector, but I’m a little bit shocked to see that the lines have actually crossed,” said Randel K. Johnson, senior vice president for labor at the United States Chamber of Commerce.

According to the labor bureau, 7.2 percent of private-sector workers were union members last year, down from 7.6 percent the previous year. That, labor historians said, was the lowest percentage of private-sector workers in unions since 1900.

Among government workers, union membership grew to 37.4 percent last year, from 36.8 percent in 2008.

We were being screwed long before this. Government employees being unionized has nothing to do with it.

It has a lot to do with it. What do you think it means for us taxpayers when a public employee gets as pension 70% of his or her highest salary? When the majority of private employees are lucky to even get 30%.

And another thing that helps screws us is the fact that most public contracts go to friends of the politician who will pay whatever the contractor asks for so long as the contractor gives some of the money back to the politician. Which helps add to us being screwed.

Government employee pensions make up what percent of Federal spending?

Now compare that to all of the other spending our government does.

You just don't like unions. That's fine. But don't pretend government employee unions are the cause of our problems.

It means we as taxpayers approved it.

You should have a chat with your fellow taxpayers and tell them to quit approving things you don't like

Not really the cause but a product of the cause and it hurts. Because union employees get better perks than we do and the fact that many of the public sector has a tendency of saying "we are taxpayers too!" really upsets me. Because if it wasn't for our income they wouldn't have one. And really it wasn't just on a federal level, it's more on a state level that these unions are really felt.

Blame the voters. They're the ones who approved this.

    Re: Great News!

A lot of states/cities have made it illegal for public employees to belong to unions. The federal government should follow suit.
