Re: Fears that World Cup could increase spread of HIV

I find the underlying context of the story revealing, and something that most people don't think about: world-class events attract sex trafficking. All of the pimps and dealers will be moving their women there, you can bet on it, and there will be children in the mix as well.

I agree that prostitution should be legalized, but the pimps and dealers of these women should remain criminalized. The women and children are being moved around in a well-oiled underground and have mostly been entrapped. A lot of them have HIV in the first place because their buyers demanded to have unprotected sex.

If the buyers get HIV then they deserve it. The buyers themselves and the traffickers are all a plague on this earth.

I really doubt it's as simple as that, but statistics are comforting, aren't they.

Factor in other communicable diseases and it's still a health risk.

I find it ironic that the welfare of the women involved is not mentioned at all, just the disease rates. How sickening.

What better way to weed out idiots than this? You think I'm being a jerk with this, but think about it. The HIV rate among the paid ladies is around 50%. So if you're DUMB enough to pay for their services... you get what you deserve.
Problem is when they spread it around to their insignificant others.

I wonder how many serious crimes will occur.
Anyone with experience or acquaintances in or of SA, wonder why this place was given the World Cup.

Sorry, this would be absolutely hilarious... except for the seriousness of it.
Are you also part of writing the Democrats healthcare plan?

Because it's ready for it? SA has developed a lot in the past 10 years. It deserves the recognition and respect of holding the world cup games.

If your sole criterion for SA not getting the games is that they have prostitution, well all I can say is that anywhere the games go the sex traffickers will just follow.

Infrastructure isn't what I'm talking about.

    It's a very dangerous place.
I know many people from there.
They know what's up, how when and where to travel.
Those that don't... will be targets.
I won't go there because of the high crime rate. Just isn't worth it.

    From 2002, but still relevant:
South Africa is the most dangerous country in the world, which is not at war.
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/talking_point/1924251.stm

CRIME: Although the vast majority of visitors complete their travels in South Africa without incident, visitors should be aware that criminal activity, often violent, occurs routinely. Notwithstanding government anti-crime efforts, violent crimes such as armed robbery, carjacking, mugging, "smash and grab" attacks on vehicles, and other incidents are regularly reported by visitors and resident Americans.

Crimes against property, such as carjacking, have often been accompanied by violent acts, including murder, when victims resist or are slow to respond to attackers’ demands. South Africa also has the highest incidence of reported rape in the world.

There are good and bad areas like anywhere else. I've been to some of the "most dangerous" places on earth and had a perfectly okay time. Statistics don't mean that I am going to get into trouble for sure.

    Are you coming to bed?
    I can't. This is important.

True, but I wouldn't hold the World Cup in the most dangerous place on earth without a war.

Statistics mean people will be at risk.
I think I made my case; knowing people that have lived there or live there.

I don't think Rio would be wise for the Olympics for the same reason.
