I totally agree with this. I'm tired of government and regulatory agencies throwing together kneejerk response policies in response to every incident and mishap.

New Rules Called "Pathetic," Misdirected - The Early Show - CBS News

In the wake of the incident on board Northwest Flight 253 on Christmas Day, airlines, airports and the Transportation Security Administration wasted no time imposing new rules, procedures and protocols, almost all of them guaranteed to make your next trip to the airport -- and your next flight experience -- even worse than you've already gone through.

The problem with this kneejerk reaction, of course, is that it also sends the wrong message about airline and airport security -- that it's not effective to begin with -- but more on that later.

Remember the shoe bomber? It was an incident that was averted, no one was injured, and now everyone must go through the ridiculous spectacle of removing their shoes while passing through security. According to this article, this is really only for show and doesn't do anything to further safety. It's just stupid!
And even though the U.S. government then eased the rules somewhat, and left it up to the discretion of individual airline pilots about allowing passengers to get out of their seats during the last hour of flight, very little could actually disguise the REAL problem -- what no one wants to talk about is this: After Richard Reid's incident with the attempted shoe bombing, we were all then required to take off our shoes and put them on the conveyor belt. Sounds good, except those machines can't recognize chemical explosives. It was / is all for show.

I've said this in the past, and i'll say it again -- it was an attempt to make people who didn't fly very often feel better. But those of us who DO fly very often KNOW better. And there are now many foreign airports that no longer require passengers to take their shoes off.

The only rule that needs to come into play is the one that fires everyone involved in the chain of screw ups that let this obvious red flag past international security. That's all.

Oh no, that's too simple and might hurt someones feelings! :doh Besides, they probably have a union contract and would need three such incidences documented, along with disciplinary meetings, in triplicate, with the appropriate union rep present.

Airline security should be left to the free market.

This thread wasn't about economic systems actually. It's about these new regulations in response to this latest incident. Maybe you can start a poll or thread about who should be in charge of airline security, eh?

Can't have that.

Actually the one's currently in charge are the problem. We need a complete top-down overhaul.

Obviously, the decision making process is flawed, if they want to make blanket draconian rules like this that punish the general public and give the terrorists a good laugh.

The terrorists are silly for continuing to target airplanes like this anyways. There's no way they'll will this 'war' with such stupid tactics. The United States is essentially a wide open target with trains, malls, supermarkets, and all kinds of unguarded targets. But no, they are obsessed with well guarded airplanes where someone must kill themselves in order to blow up their target. They'll never win with this kind of plan.

The government can't do anything better than the free market.

Not sure what Glen Beck has to do with this discussion. I know you are particularly interested in the man and start a lot of threads on him, and like to debunk his ideas. But I don't see how his opinion on free-market vs government has much to do with these new rules, other than the fact that you want to interject Glen Beck into this discussion.

If the government would just get out of the way, the free market will provide all the airline security consumers want.

What do you have against Capitalism? Are you a Communist?

I wish people would stop whining and engaging in the blame game. I just flew recently and thought it was much more benign an experience vs. other aspects of my life.

Come on people grow a pair and do what is needed to make sure some moron doesn't blow us up at 30,000 feet!
