This isn't all of Iran. Its a small segment and if the US or the western world tries to help the protestors you can bet that the "revolution" will be over.

After having read your post more carefully, Dana. I think you should know that many of the people leading the protests are Mullahs themselves. Ayatollah Montazeri is a prominant supporter of the protestors and many of the protestors are pro-Montazeri. Montazeri is definately not anti-mullah.

I'd like to be hopeful. It would be a nice change of pace.

Overthrowing the Mullahs and their puppet government won't be easy. I wish the people of Iran well in this effort.

One thing that worries me is this: even IF they do succeed in overthrowing the existing government, there is no guarantee that what replaces it will be substantially better, or peaceful and not-threatening-neighbors. Revolution is a chancy thing... contrast the American Revolution with France's revolution (Robespierre and the Reign of Terror, etc).

There's a lot of questions to be asked. What do the Iranian people want, exactly? They are opposed to the Mullahs, but what do they want in their place? For all we know, their vision might not be anything we'd recognize as a free and democratic peaceful republic.

Even if many of the Iranian people would want that, what if a Robespierre or a Stalin hijacks their revolution? It could easily happen. "Strong-man leadership" is a culturally common concept in that part of the world.

It's not that I want to rain on the parade, Lord knows I hope for the best, I'm just throwing out a word of caution that the revolution could just as easily be led by a Robespierre/Stalin/Mao-tse as a Jefferson/Franklin/Washington archetype, and we should take care not to make ethnocentric assumptions about what the "will of the people" might be.

That's a basic law of war? I think Sun Tzu would puke if he heard that.
    Are you coming to bed?
    I can't. This is important.

Ok, and John Kerry is planning to visit Iran and lend credibility to the Iranian government. Does your crybaby rant about partisanship mean that you support Kerry's mission?

Oh, BTW, the protesters really don't want Kerry to pay Ahmainajihad a friendly visit.
