Iran Forces Occupy Iraqi Oil Well, Border Guard Says

We'll have to wait and see if there's any validity to this report. But, are the Iranians really this stupid? And, for those that believe in a hands off Iran strategy, would this be a game changer?

Dec. 18 (Bloomberg) -- Iranian forces yesterday entered Iraqi territory at dawn, and occupied well number 4 in the East Maysan field in al-Fakah region, 450 kilometers (280 miles) south of Baghdad, Border Guard General Zafer Nazmi said. The Iranian forces positioned tanks around the well.

I hear-tell that this particular oil rig swaps hands regularly... I'd like to hear from someone who actually knows!

What's stupid about it? They're testing Obama. We all knew they, or somebody, would. I just can't believe they waited so long. If these guys are successful look for more provocations in the middle east, n korea, and, possibly, south america.

Lets not over react. The border is disputed and this hasn't even been verified by the Iraqi government.

Baghdad, Iraq (CNN) -- The Iraqi government Friday demanded the withdrawal of an Iranian "armed group" that it says seized an oil well in southern Iraq on Thursday night.

Iran is denying any takeover took place.

The Iraqi government issued a strong statement deploring the act after Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki headed an emergency meeting of Iraq's National Security Council to discuss the situation.

It is for real, but that border region is disputed. How many times does it have to be said?

This has nothing to do with Obama.

Hmmmmm.... the US has around 100,000 troops in Iraq. That border has been stable for the last 8 years. Iran decided at this late date to invade Iraq and steal one of it's largest oil wells.

And you say this has nothing to do with testing Barry?

Re: Iran Forces Occupy Iraqi Oil Well, Border Guard Says

This story already smells incredibally fishy. Sooo... Tons of Iranian guards stormed in to a shared oilfield and kicked all the workers out. Then they hung up their flag. Then... They jut left. I'm calling bull**** on this one.

Iraq accuses Iran of seizing oil well near border - Yahoo! News

The al-Fakkah field is considered a shared field between Iran and Iraq, meaning both nations are able to pump oil from it, but the Iraqis consider oil well No. 4 theirs. Iraq's state-owned Maysan oil company runs the field.

Iranian soldiers carrying rifles seized the well Thursday night in a 25-car convoy and ordered the Iraqi workers to leave the area, according to a worker at the site who did not want to be identified for fear of retribution. The soldiers then mounted an Iranian flag inside the well, he said.

There were no reports of violence during the incident, and Iranian forces left the well on Friday, leaving the flag behind, the worker said. His account could not be immediately confirmed by officials.

Iraqi security forces were in the area, but there are no reports of any fighting or any shots being fired, he said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on the record. The Iranians are believed to have left the area, he said.
Sooo... Iraq security was at the area. No fighting happened. And the tipper is annon. BULLCHIT

The hands off Iran "strategy" is about opposing US intervention in Iran. I fail to see how this affects that "strategy".

That isn't true at all. This border has been in conflict throughout and long before the occupation. It just generally hasn't involved tanks, as far as I know.

Are you serious? The border has been porous for a long time and remains to be to some extent. Do you have any idea how long that border is and how little of it 100,000 troops could guard?
