Cop Tases 10-Year-Old Girl

Cop Tases 10-Year-Old Girl

Arkansas mother suggested stun gun treatment for unruly daughter

NOVEMBER 18--An Arkansas cop tasered an unruly 10-year-old girl after her mother called police to report that the child was crying, screaming, and refusing to go to bed. The tased girl, Kiara Medlock, is about 65 pounds and 4' 6", according to her father. Anthony Medlock, a truck driver who does not live with the fifth grader and her mother, provided TSG with a recent photo of his daughter, which can be seen at right.

According to the below Ozark Police Department report, when Officer Dustin Bradshaw arrived at the residence last Thursday, he found the girl "screaming, kicking, and resisting every time her mother tried to touch her." Bradshaw added that, "Her mother told me to tase her if I needed to."

After Kiara continued to refuse her mother's instructions, the cop concluded that "there was not going to be a peaceful resolution of the issue." Bradshaw warned the girl that she was "going to jail," but the child continued kicking and crying and resisted his attempt to handcuff her. During the tussle, Kiara "struck me with her legs and feet in the groin, reported Bradshaw, who countered with a brief "stun to her back" with his Taser.

The child, not surprisingly, "immediately stopped resisting and was placed into handcuffs. She would not walk on her own and I had to carry her to my police car." Kiara was then transported to a youth shelter. (1 page)

I think, even as much as she deserved it, this may have gone a bit far.

Why dont parents believe in whacking their brats, seriously? If the parent didnt want to hit the brat, she shouldve at least just thrown here in her room and let her tire herself out.

Weren't you the one who said we should give a cop shooting a man in the back time? He tases some retarded little girl and it went too far? You're a walking contradiction.

I think we all know what the Bible says about sparing the taser.

I think he could have hurt her more by trying to wrestle her into submission. However, I don't know if there is a physiological reason not to electrocute children. If people under a certain age are more likely to have serious health effects from it then that is something cops need to know. Otherwise I say zap away.

Instead of tasing this child, why not call for a supervisor and some backup? I think a couple of female officers would have resolved this incident without the use of a stun gun.

Or maybe call some one like CPS or a juvenile hall

1. The cop needs to lose his job. 10 year-olds DO NOT go to jail... ever! They go to juvevile hall.

2. Tazing a 46 pound child is beyond unacceptable.

3. This is disgusting.

4. Handcuffing a 10 year-old is UNACCEPTABLE.

I hope her father sues the police for all they are worth.

And if they refuse to go? I think force is sometimes necessary, and handcuffs are considered an acceptable means of restraint in our society. What alternative would you have them use on violent minors who refuse to cooperate and pose a danger to the physical well-being of themselves or the officer?
2. Tazing a 46 pound child is beyond unacceptable.
Size doesn't matter, if a dwarf attacks a police officer then taze them. If a child tries to shoot you, kill them. The law doesn't have a weight limit.
4. Handcuffing a 10 year-old is UNACCEPTABLE.

Whether or not you believe this was appropriate, I would just like to point out that photographs (or even drawings) of the incident could be considered child pornography here in Virginia, and probably in most states.

4'6", 65 pounds. Ten year old girl.

Taser.

No, I don't see it.

Maybe it is because I was a cop back before Tasers were in use. We used to wrestle people into cuffs on a regular basis, it was SOP.

A sixty-five pound girl? Puh-leese. I marched two-hundred-and-sixty-five pounders off to jail by myself with no tools other than what I was born with.

If I was her father I would've picked her up, whupped her butt, put her in her bedroom and let her stay there until she straightened up. What has happened to parental authority?

My son is an overgrown teenager, an inch taller than me, with linebacker shoulders, weighs in at 215 with a 32-in waist... and he knows not to mess with Daddy. I conditioned him to obedience before he was five years old. He "repects my authoritei".

I have a hard time imagining calling the cops to deal with my 65 lb 10-year old.

It was my understanding that when Tasers first came into use, they were an alternative to shooting a perp, or beating him with a PR24 baton, when he could not be otherwise handled. Apparently that policy has given way to "taser at the first sign of difficulty" with some departments.

IIRC there have been over 100 deaths linked to Taser use in this country. PD's and Taser Inc explain them away as "pre-existing heart/etc conditions" for the most part, but any way you slice it people occasionally die after being tasered.

One of these days there's going to have to be a ruling that puts Taser use a little higher on the force continuum, like say just barely under "baton beatdown", because there's more risk to it than PD's and the company apparently want to admit.

Because if you don't & they get a beating that they deserve & you leave a mark, YOU just might be answering to the authorities for child abuse, etc....
While no one likes to see a child beaten a result of a parents 'issues', the law has swung too far the other way & prevents parents from administering any real punishment.....
Spanking, etc. is an effective deterrrant to poor behavior.....
Some kids just need a whoopin' just to make sure the message sinks in...;)

There are parents who consider their children to be brats:(
These "parents" are the true brats.
Solution?
There may be no solution; just place the children in prison now and get it over with:(

BTW, I was supposedly "abused" as a child, so my opinions are "colored".

Dude, I raised my child the old fashioned way. He got his butt whipped when he needed it, including in a few public restrooms if he showed his ass in public. Personally I think the results speak for theirself.

I will NOT let fears of DSS interfere with my ability to parent, it is too important.

Parental Handbook Rule Number One: Beat ass as necessary. That is why it is heavily padded.

Plenty of people are WAY too paranoid about DSS taking their kids if they dare take a switch to that behind. For one thing, it doesn't really happen that often in most states. If you raise up a monster with no discipline, you'll realize that DSS is a candy-ass fear compared to what you get from a child with no respect for authority.

This is a parental admission of failure.
We need psychologists smart enough to handle this, and there may be none to be had.
I'd like to see "health care reform" cover this; conservative extremists, please stay away...:spin:

I agree with you, I'm just pointing out what the spectre of GUBMINT has visited upon us.....
Quite often, the mere threat of a spanking, etc. is enough of a deterrant....
I'm saying the laws are over-reaching, just like a lot of domestic abuse laws are.....;)

Punishment administered without love is not discipline. The spanking is a small portion of the discipline.
Your Parental Handbook Rules are incomplete.
The Department of Child Services(DSS) may not know of these things either (love)....so they should be investigated...or they should be more open.
To have a "no-spank" is wrong.

Don't misconstrue because I didn't write a book.

Yes, discipline without love breeds resentment and rebellion, as does discipline without relationship and involvement.

Love, involvement and relationship seem to be understood by many parents... it is the discipline aspect far too many seem to fail in.

If you do it right from an early age your children will be a joy and not a trial. I haven't had any need to lay a finger on my child for years.

Because we always have extra officers around every corner to rush to the defense of an officer having a hard time with a 10 year old.

You apparently don't live in a small town where 1 officer patrols the whole town during dark hours, with about 4 for the whole county.

Thats the problem with kids, we coddle them and they kick us (us being adults/parents) in the groin for all of our troubles. Kids don't receive discipline anymore because their parents are either too busy being their friends or too busy ignoring them because they need to climb the corporate ladder at Bank of America.

I agree.

Unfortunately it shows no sign of stopping anytime in the next century.

Re: Cop Tases 10-Year-Old Girl

Because parents are turning into ******s.

Or because the ignorant media + liberal courts = parents being afraid to discipline their children for fear of going to jail for child abuse.
