How low will he go? Obama gives Japan's Emperor Akihito a wow bow

Okay. So then, did the Emporor bow to the President?

I didn't think so. So now, is anyone ready to criticize the Emp for that?!!

He is bowed a bit - could be on the way down or on the way up. You can't really tell from that one pic

My take is that the Emperor went in for the handshake, Obama threw him by going for the bowshake, and the Emperor dipped a bit to avoid awkwardness. Looks to me like Obama flubbed it, but the right wing here is just being ridiculous

So why don't you round them up and send them to the reeducation camps. You could execute those that persisted being non-compliant.

.

Ah. More substance free posts from you. Just because I think America would be better off without them doesn't mean I think they shouldn't be free to say what they want.

Since you seem to disagree with me that America would be better off, tell me, how does America benefit from extremely petty, immature and stupid people?

Or you could just run away.

Because bowing in English culture is a symbol of subservience, but in Arab and Japanese cultures it is a symbol of mutual respect, and not of subservience.

Not all cultures are the same.

Thanks for the response. The Japanese exchange students who have stayed in our home have told us that bowing is customary in Japanese society, but that an inferior bows low to the superior, while the superior does not bow as low.

So by bowing lower to the Emperor than the Emperor bowed to him was Obama acknowledging his position as an inferior? Probably not. He either has an incompetent protocol staff or Obama's bow was made for an ulterior purpose.

What ulterior purpose? In a prior post I alluded to Obama's real purpose in kowtowing. Obama was inspecting the Emperor's erection. Prove me wrong.

When we're talking about a hybrid handshake/bow I don't know that traditional Japanese customs regarding the specific degree of the bow matter. Obviously the handshake/bow hybrid isn't common in Japan, and isn't traditional.

More like insanely ridiculous.

I keep bringing up examples of Republicans bowing and no one, not a single person here criticizing Obama is willing to even acknowledge that Republicans, including REAGAN bowed to foreign heads of state.

That screams to me it's not about the bowing. They are just searching for anything, no matter how petty, to bash him on. Immature little people. Sad. Amusingly, they are also the people to defended Bush when the immature liberals attacked Dubya for the dumbest thing. Hypocrites every last one of them.

This is a good test of who is rational. People who aren't get all upset over petty **** like this. People who aren't don't.

Ike ain't bowing. He's checking to make sure De Gauille's shoes are newly polished before he spits on them.

They should have beaten whoever advised the Presidents to show that mere amount of respect for the leader of a nation we are supposed to get our way with!

Someone needs to invent a country where the customary greeting is to make out with two really hot chicks at the same time.

America is now this country.

And I ask you, My fellow Americans...is this too much?

So Obama is right and about 70 other heads of state were incorrect for not bowing?

This is just left and right nonsense, bush goes through the wrong door, liberals post the picture, and all lol. Obama bows to the king and emperor, and the far right posts the pictures and lol.

We have much bigger fish to fry in both parties, like how they are destroying the wealth of this country, all while spending trillions of dollars they don't have. Or how they are attempting to destroy our fragile free market system, and kill our capitalist system, a system that has been the envy of the world. still another worry, now they want to take over our health system, controlling more and more of our daily lives.

we have real problems people......
Well said.

It would appear so yes!

"Bows are the traditional greeting in East Asia, particularly in Korea and Japan. However, bowing is not reserved only for greetings. Bowing is a gesture of respect."

Sigh, not when you are a head of state.

Pamela Eyring, the president of The Protocol School of Washington, said that while there's no "hard-and-fast" rule, a bow is not appropriate when national leaders meet.

"They're peers. ... Unfortunately, it isn't correct for a chief of state to bow to another chief of state,"

"It's not appropriate. He should not be bowing to other chiefs of state."

She said Obama was clearly trying to show respect, but that the royal couple would not expect such a gesture from a Western leader. Eyring, who reviewed the video of the encounter, said they seemed a "bit uncomfortable" watching Obama bow.

"When you're representing the United States of America, everything speaks ... on behalf of our country," Eyring said. "It's a visual. It shows more of a subservient look."

Japan's reaction to Obama bowing before the Emperor

Japan's reaction to Obama bowing before the Emperor

During Barack Obama’s first presidential visit to Japan, he managed to work in a private lunch with Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko. The lunch, which lasted about an hour, was reported to have just been the three of them plus one interpreter. While the topics of their lunchtime conversation remain a mystery, the Japanese media delightedly reported on the event, stating how Obama made a polite short English greeting before entering the palace.

Some in America, however, have picked up on the brief, but rather deep bow Obama made as he shook hands with the Emperor. Some have decried it as a complete gaffe, some have pointed out the faux pas in Japanese etiquette of not mixing a bow and a handshake, and others have commented that Obama is simply showing respect for other cultures."

While the Japanese media has largely avoided commenting on the incident, numerous comments have been made on Japanese blogs and open forums. The general comments have been rather different in tone from that of American counterparts. Here are some select comments made on several sites:

[All comments translated from Japanese]

* “What a bow!”
* “Such a deep bow from Obama, what a fine guy.”
* “I’m surprised he bowed. He’s really trying hard to meet the Japanese way!”
* “President Obama is a top-class person, isn’t he? Amazing!”
* “The Emperor is giving a nice smile!”
* “Is the Japanese Emperor really that special?”
* “The Emperor or the Pope, the President or the Prime Minister, whoever is greater is not something that I think can be decided objectively.”
* “I laughed because it was a much better bow than I had imagined.”
* “Obama’s huge!”
* “Obama has more of a true Japanese heart than most Japanese do.”

can anyone explain how this is significant in any way?

i'm just wondering why any program would allow students in your home.

Reciprocity. There is a sister city program between my hometown and a city in Japan. Students from both sister cities participate. Our sons were hosted by Japanese families. In turn we hosted Japanese students visiting this side of the Pacific.
