Westboro Baptist Church Protests Outside Obama Girls' School | TPM LiveWire

Seriously, WTF?

They believe that the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, as well as the ensuing wars and even the mass shooting last week at Fort Hood, are punishment from God for tolerance of homosexuality. They plan to picket the Fort Hood memorial service this Tuesday.

The group, which is not affiliated with the Baptist church, protests nearly every day in Washington, D.C., rotating around the city. According to their web site, today they plan to hit a few more local schools and the White House, and will be at the Sidwell Friends Lower School tomorrow afternoon.

"Quakers?! Are you frigging kidding me? You pretend to be all non-violent, and you allow the most bloody, deceitful, evil, murderous bastard and his shemale sidekick to place their satanic spawn within your four walls?" reads the posting for today's protest at Sidwell Friends, which is a Quaker school.

The school has not yet responded to a request for comment.

Randall Terry, the extreme anti-abortion protester, has also arranged demonstrations outside the school.

Late update: Ellis Turner, the associate head of school at Sidwell Friends, tells TPM the school took no action to remove the protesters, who were across the street.

"We support the First Amendment here, so there was nothing we wanted to do about it," he said. "There was nothing they did other than offend those who didn't agree with their bigoted viewpoints."

One of the few groups I've seen able to get legitimate and usually unconditional disdain from most on both sides of the political spectrum. They're nutjobs

I think it's interesting, though, in light of Apdst's claims about PC.

I remember them being at the Billy Graham crusade a few years back (Billy and Fred are old acquaintances). They were my inspiration for being an IRL troll. :)

These people are idiots, idiots are best left ignored.

On behalf of legitimate Baptist-dom: we think they're a bunch of nutjob haters, sorely in need of a world-class butt-whuppin'.

Now, now...as you say, definitions of words change, so what gives "legitimate" Baptist-dom the right to a label if the WBC has a sounder theological claim? Has there been any actual dispute of that? :)

At least they haven't decided to protest the funerals of the Fort Hood victims.

****. All because you mentioned it today, they are going to do it tommorow. ****.

I've done research on the Phelps family. They're not as crazy as people might think. Fred Phelps aside from the fact that he was an original fire & brimstone preacher was one of the first people in his state to go up against his state on civil rights matters and was according to legal documents an excellent lawyer. They are just expressing their religious beliefs in a uninterrupted manner. If anything I think they're consistent in their attacks of what they think is a nation that they believe is 'doomed'. They're just more vocal about it.

Regardless of what legitimate baptists say, their position(that of the Phelps family) is not one that is alien to baptist. Do baptists not think gays are going to burn in hell? Have we not had baptist/catholic ministers on television talking about whenever something bad happens in America it's because of our secularism or the fault of gays and lesbians? Legitimate baptists are fooling themselves if they don't think these people are as legitimate in their beliefs as Jerry Falwell or whoever holds the title of megastar in the baptist world. The Phelps family are an "extremist" wing of the baptist world but as far as being illegitimate? Seriously doubt that.

In related news, someone spiked the punch of the Westboro Baptist Church protesters at one of their rallies yesterday. Police later picked them all up after they stripped naked and began buggering each other in front of shocked onlookers. As he was led away, one of the protesters was heard to exclaim "I will picket myself now, and I pray that the all-powerful loving God who hates me sentences me to fry in hell, but I like it, I like it".

Allow me to dispel any myths about the Westboro Baptist Church and the Phelp's Clan.

1. They are a family of lawyers who use the 1st Amendment to troll the American public at large while sometimes receiving Government compensation each time their 1st Amendment Rights are 'compromised'.

2. If you ever see them on the street, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO RUN THEM OVER...unless you can get all of them in one swoop. Having to circle back increases the chance of positive identification by bystanders.

If people want to take the wind out of Westboro's sails they should simply ignore them. The Westboro Baptists feed off public outrage because they are nothing more than media whores. If people stop paying attention to them the Westboro morons will lose a major source of motivation and validation.

We should just pretend like they don't exist. They aren't even worth getting mad over because they're so utterly pathetic.

No, what Catholic "ministers" were on TV saying these things?

Nutjobs ... I do not believe that term is strong enough to describe what those bunch of looneytoons actually are.

:doh

I don't like those turds, but it's nice to see liberals getting some of that action for a change.

Really, they're scam artists who have found a way to make money off the constitution and a radical platform.

Please don't try to change the subject to Congress.
