Where Do People Get Their TV News? (Current Ratings)

I wanted to post this article so that people would reconsider the concept that Fox News has the highest ratings. Yes, its true when comparing cable news networks. But how does this compare to network news and by HOW MUCH?

To demonstrate this, I am going to list the ratings by average households. I would agree this is apple and oranges but the point is that the evening network news is still a large influence. So this is the current ratings by household:

    Ratings by average household

    NBC 6.3 million
    ABC 5.9 million
    CBS 4.6 million

    Fox 1.0 million
    CNN .5 million
    MSNBC .3 million

For breaking news, give me Fox.

For evening news I watch ABC & NBC, equally.

    From the article:
A handful of news and opinion-focused cable channels are vigorously fighting to pull in more viewers looking for their news fix. But by far the most significant chunk of television watchers still turn to the networks' nightly newscasts for their daily news summary
I wasn't aware Fox had any nightly news. :/

    Well...at least...I don't think....

    Do they?...

All you've proven is that most people don't pay for TV (cable, Sat).... now that is a total surprise.

No, this is comparing NEWS viewing. This is not showing all the other shows being watched on the other 300+ Sat/cable channels.

I don't own a TV so that should tell you what I think of TV news.

I watch PBC....is that strange? I feel like it's more news about the country and the world then what other networks show. Which is more entertainment and fear mongering, and making issues that shouldn't be an issue.

Re: Where Do People Get Their TV News? (Current Ratings)

I probably should have asked people to list where they watch the news or where they get their news.

Rightofcenter is correct. The demographics show older people watch TV news. Just look at the ads. When I watch, I watch CBS (a tradition for me since the Walter Cronkite years) and the ads are all drugs for older people. But I rarely watch the whole thing. I usually TiVo and then just watch sections that are real news and not fluff. And if Reno 911 is on at the same time, I don't watch it at all.

I listen to All Things Considered on NPR quite a bit.

I read the local newspaper. I also subscribe to the online version of the Chicago Sun-Times. Talk about a medium that has lost favor. The majority of kids growing up now do not go near them.

There are just so many sources out there especially when you consider you got the internet. News when you want and where you want it from. It kind of makes the "liberal" media argument a bit of a sham. You can find news from any angle and political views. No need to cry about it or claim that Fox News ratings indicate a revolution of tea baggers is sweeping the country.
