Obama suggests Fox News is like 'talk radio' - The Hill's Blog Briefing Room

By Eric Zimmermann - 10/22/09 10:08 AM ET

Fox News is "operating basically as talk radio," President Obama suggested in an interview airing today.

After weeks of public feuding between the cable news channel and the president's top aides, Obama seemed to agree with statements by his advisers that Fox is not a real "news station."

"I think what our advisers have simply said is that we are going to take media as it comes," Obama told NBC's Savannah Guthrie. "And if media is operating basically as a talk radio format then that's one thing, and if it's operating as a news outlet that's another but it's not something I'm losing sleep over."

White House Senior Adviser David Axelrod said this weekend that Fox is "not really a news station." That echoies similar comments made by White House Communications Director Anita Dunn and White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel.

Obama has been measured and found to be lacking in the one thing most important to long term success in politics. That being credibility. Obama is on the ropes after repeated amateurish acts and decisions and is liashing out like a child caught lying and who is left with nothing better to say say than: "Well oh yea!"
Obama has wasted more money on more rediculous things than any on in American history and Fox News is the TV network calling him on his lies and the Communists and Radicals he's put in positions of authority even though his Czars have now power under the Constitution.
He has used the Alinskey rules for radicals his whole life and Fox is not falling for his BS and it galls him no end. As I said he's like a child and dangerous because he's usin our tax money to attack people who speak the truth about him.
He will go down in History as the person who tried to destroy America from with in and Pelosi and Reid will join in that shame.

In general do we have a "real" news organization at all? Almost all are some corporate captured propaganda machine for one side or the other. Obama getting bogged down in a "war" against Fox News is dumb. He should have just said that they are free to say and believe as they like, and been done with it. Instead, it gets drawn out into an exercise in stupidity and makes him look even worse. Who cares if there is dissent, dissent is good and necessary on the whole.

i could almost agree. i do think that cnn is more centrist than the other cable outlets, but i don't watch much of any of them.

fox doesn't dissent so much as dissemble. and obama isn't in a war, i'm glad he's not ignoring fox. he's handling 6this well, imo. not too much, but enough.

There is a large perception problem though in that you have the head of the federal government basically going after a media outlet. The press is supposed to be free in this country and not subject to the whims and ideals of any administration. Fox isn't fair or balanced by any means, they are a right-wing news organization. But whatever, it's America and they're free to do as they like. I think the problem here comes in when Obama and his administration come after a media outlet like this. He is in a "war" of sorts. And it's just more endless bickering. He's the goddamned President of the United States, he needs to get over it. He shouldn't have gotten bogged down in this, he has too much work that needs to be done without engaging in a side pissing match with a news outlet.

he was asked a question, right? he answered it. he also said he didn't lose sleep over it, right?

fox would love for it to be a war, but obama won't take it that far.

I respect Obama for having the balls to finally stand up to Fox.

It's a distraction from the failures of his domestic policies and the situation in Afghanistan. I think it will blow up in his face, in the end, but this is all by design.

It's not, nor should it be the job of the president to, "stand up", to a media orginization. As Ikari pointed out, this is America, we have a free press. Agree with them, or not, FNC has every right to operate how they please.

So the press is free in this country why should th WHs hand be tied when calling BS on the press?

If calling BS was all they did, there would be nothing wrong with. Krewe Obama is going way past just calling BS. They are telling the rest of the media, "don't question us, or we'll come after you too". The MSM, as a whole should be ashamed for sitting back and allowing it to happen, especially after the decades of them insisting they are the gaurdians of liberty.

Saying that a news organization is lying and censoring them are two different things.

Obama has the right to defend himself. Fox has the right to lie about him too (and they are really exercising that right).

He's taking it rather beyond merely "defending himself."

When the government tries to intimmidate a news org, it's a violation of the 1st Amendment. Period.

Sure, he has the right to rebut their reports, but he can't use intimidation to do so. Especially when FNC isn't lieing. Can you show us any report that FNC did about PBO that is a lie? Can't wait to see it, so far everyone else has failed to present an example of such.

It is as if the sitting president does not have the same rights as everyone else. I keep thinking of our PM's - the number of news outlets they have had a "go" at over the years is unreal.

Our news outlets are so used to it that they treat it as fun.

Mind you the one they take a swipe at most often is the government owned ABC - which the ABC simply points out means it must be doing it's job if it is upsetting the government

which the ABC simply points out means it must be doing it's job if it is upsetting the government

Then, apparently, Fox News is doing its job, yes?

A very immature Nixonlike move here. This whiner adminstration does have real problems to solve does it not? What a waste of time and another attempt at distraction.

They have failed to take their responsibilities seriously yet again.

I respect Obama for having the balls to finally stand up to Fox.

I respect the the ability to make quick strong decisions and stoicly accept the consequences and whatever criticism that accompanies them.

It is unfortunate we dont have any of that anymore.

The whitehouse should be above rolling in the mud on the playground.
They should have quite a lot on their plate and this is not a priority.

This administration is a disgrace to the office.

So the press is free in this country why should th WHs hand be tied when calling BS on the press?

Because the government's hands should be tied. If false, they can present evidence to the contrary.

Fox is not owned by the government - it is owned by Murdoch who has his own world agenda

Wait -- you're saying that only government-owned news media has the job of going after the government?

Oh so the White House should just be complacent with what ever accusations are being tossed around?

They should focus on the business of running the United States Goverment. This issue has no place in that.

A part of that is publicity like it or not.

They have a guy for that.

Granny from Loony toons or Baghdad bob. Its hard to remember his name.

Responding to criticism is pure childishness on the part of the administration.
