This is a lesson in civics. Elementary schools frequently use songs in their lessons.

Christopher M. Manno, the superintendent of Burlington Township School District, issued a statement to parents saying the students were singing the song "to honor the contributions of African Americans to our country" in conjunction with February's Black History Month.

How exactly is praising a specific elected leader a "lesson in civics"? What did the school children learn from this exercise, in your opinion?

They were honoring African's American's service to our country in honor of African American history month. President Obama is included.

Which African Americans? Was the song about Martin Luther King, Jr? Or Rosa Parks? Or W.B. DuBois?

I challenge your assertion that these children learned ANYTHING from this song aside from slavish adoration of the current president.

Yes, I realize that he did so. It's a shame this effort didn't focus on real contributions. Obama has been president 8 months and is currently a sitting president. What part of the song honored his specific "accomplishments," aside from the fact that he got elected?

I see the lyrics. I don't, however, see how that fits into Black History month.

Barack Obama is the first African American elected President in history, which is a historical big deal.
