    W.H. hails Russia/Iran breakthrough

    W.H. hails Russia/Iran breakthrough - Josh Gerstein - POLITICO.com

Diplomacy paying dividends? All parties are denying a quid pro quo re: the missile deal in Eastern Europe, but perhaps shifting tactics and looking to accomplish our strategic goals in ways that don't piss off other countries was a good idea? Russia is making statements about helping address the Iranian nuke program problem by participating in sanctions against Iran.

    Hmmmm ...

Participating in sanctions does not mean anything. What will matter is the language the resolution to enact sanctions and what the sanctions actually are.

I would wager Russia does not give us what we want in that regard. Not to mention we are still deploying missile defense in Eastern Europe, and Russia is still making noise about deploying near Poland.

We should have traded sanctions for the Polish site.

I thought one of the reasons given for the lack of sanctions working in the past was that Russia did not participate in them?

Seems like a good step forward here, Flanagan.

Well, Russia did indeed block anything meaningful before, but I still see little indication (at least until the language in such a resolution is known) that Russia is going to do anything more than they have already done.

We are going to need Russian help yes, but we ought to have traded the Third Site for concessions on sanctions or limiting of advanced arms sales from Russia to Iran. We gave away our best bargaining position for basically a "maybe."

I think we could and should have done better than that.

I think Russia will still use sanctions as leverage to get more out of us, and we will have effectively given away the Third Site for nothing.

This statement "“As to...sanctions, Russia's belief is very simple, and I stated it recently. Sanctions rarely lead to productive results. But in some cases sanctions are inevitable. Finally, it is a matter of choice" does not show me anything that Russia will suddenly take more action to help us. Nor does this mean that sanctions are actually going to work if enacted, and it certainly does not mean the end of the Iranian nuclear program.

This thread is making me laugh so hard my side hurts. Hooya! Diplomacy for the win! Iran sure learned their lesson! If they don't shape up, Obama is going to have to have another talk with them!

I really shouldn't be laughing at the colossal mistakes being made right now, but there's really nothing I can do about it.

oh, boy, are some people ever naive

i refer here to our prez

he himself is not even certain about sanctions

    they remain but "a possibility"

and what about his grand moment, just the day before

on thursday, as chair of security counsel obama won thru a UNANIMOUS resolution in favor of a pretty nuke free planet

but ahmedinejad threw a wrench into that resolve

and it took less than 24 hours

indeed, while the president was chairing, obama KNEW about qom

    the russians issue a statement---LOLOL!

the white house calls that success---LOLOLOL!

what happened to the president's personal diplomacy with persia, centerpiece of his campaign, with NO preconditions?

    remember?

that too appears a little gullible, no?

    congrats, mr president

maybe for your coffee klatsch with ahmedinejad, putin can brew the arabica while you shop for almonds

the prez cancels a missile D and alters attitudes inside the kremlin---now, that's funny

    cooperation, baby!

too bad the scrawny dude who held our 52 for 444 days didn't get the word

    LOLOL!
