Kennedy Successor Could Come Next Week

Legislative leaders in Massachusetts "believe they have narrow majorities in both chambers to give Gov. Deval Patrick (D) the power to appoint an interim U.S. senator, in a sign that the controversial measure may pass," the Boston Globe reports.

"Patrick has signaled privately that he'd like to sign the bill by Friday and make an appointment within days, possibly having an interim senator in place by next week."

Democrats need that vote, that's for damn sure. I wonder who it will be? I've heard Dukakis mentioned a few times.

Party politics at its worst... when the rules don't suit you, change them! If the governor is a republican, make it illegal. If the governor is a democrat, change it back!

Sounds pretty standard stuff here both parties do this. I remember republicans were close to using the "nuclear option" to end the filibuster but then they lost control of congress

And if they had, I can guarantee you than 95% of the people supporting this bill would have been complaining about that.

Rather than simply saying "oh well, just politics, go for it," why don't we actually call our parties out when they do stupid and undemocratic **** like this?

I called them out for the change in '04 - that was purely political.
This one is how it should be. An election to let the people choose, with a temporary appt in the interim.

No question, they were playing politics in '04.

Well I think senators should all have special elections its what we do for the house. Or maybe have the state legislature or something vote on it and not put it in the hands of one person

Because his side benefits from unethical acts.

I actually think this is a better law for the people. Get someone into the seat quick so they at least have some representation and then have a special election in short order. I also think the person appointed to the seat should be mandated to be a member of the party that the person that died was.

That said...

I do find it incredibly "Politics as Usual" and extremely hackey for them to do this, as I have absolutely zero belief they're doing it "for the good of the people" or because its how the rules best serve the state, but purely because of politics. That's evident due to the pathetic change they did in 2004.

That said, their incredibly ****ty, dishonest, and rather pathetic motives doesn't change the fact that this is a good change.

No question they're playing politics now.

Doesn't really matter, they are either going to choose a placeholder till January, or they are going to pick the guy their state probably would have voted for.

Can't have those pesky filibusters.

Truth be told, leaving a Senate seat open for an extended period of time was a dumb policy to begin with; senate representation is kind of important no matter what the context is. A temporary appointment seems only sane if you have to insist on prolonging the process by making it a matter of popular election.

Rather than simply saying "oh well, just politics, go for it," why don't we actually call our parties out when they do stupid and undemocratic **** like this?

I can't think of a historical example where people put principles like that ahead of political opportunity while in the middle of a political opportunity, which suggests the practice would be unsustainable. Eventually, some party would crack and exploit an opportunity, which would send us down a spiral comparable to what has happened in real history.

This is because people are stupid, fickle, and willing to overlook crap like this when it's their party doing it.

If people were not so stupid, fickle, and willing to overlook crap like this when it's their party doing it, we might actually have some politicians who would live up to those expectations.

I'm permitting myself a rare flight from reality on this one, but it's hard to admit that we shouldn't expect better from politicians because we don't deserve better.
