Jimmy "Smeagol" Carter: opposition to Obama is racist

Former president Jimmy Carter told NBC's Brian Williams in an interview Tuesday that he believes race is at the core of much of the opposition to President Obama.

"I think an overwhelming portion of the intensely demonstrated animosity toward President Barack Obama is based on the fact that he is a black man, that he's African American," Carter said. "I live in the South, and I've seen the South come a long way, and I've seen the rest of the country that shared the South's attitude toward minority groups at that time, particularly African Americans"

Continued Carter, who is famously from Georgia: "And that racism inclination still exists. And I think it's bubbled up to the surface because of the belief among many white people, not just in the South but around the country, that African-Americans are not qualified to lead this great country. It's an abominable circumstance, and it grieves me and concerns me very deeply."

LBC is talking about this right now (Alot of Brits are phoning in crying racism lol) and James has raised a interesting and excellent point to slap them all back down

I'm sure there are some who dislike Obama because he is Black or non white but how can we be sure when criticism of the President is racism when it may be legitimate. Are Africans now only allowed to criticise Obama to escape the 'racist' tag? Where is the line between racially motivated criticism and valid ones?

Its the same for every political issue that involves a minority. For example, is calling on for tighter immigration and a tougher stance on illegals a racist viewpoint or a viewpoint one believes is for the well being of the state? It could be one or the other. But its wrong to label one person as a Xenephone for there views through an assumption, which i find to be an act of ignorance. Many Europhiles try and play the Xenephobe card on me, as hypocritical as that view is considering its coming from their mouths (dont worry i make sure they know it too), but my point is based on the fact that its for the wellbeing of the state. If you can proove everybody who is anti-socialized medicine are redneck confederate racists, then you have a point. Otherwise, you have no ground to say opposition is based on race. America is very capitalist and fears socialized medicine will increase debt and lower quality, and it doesnt want more inflation. These are of course all valid points though i do not neccessarily agree with their views in general.

Although the comparison is pretty funny I think the daily show's comparison of McCain to Gollum was more on the target

And that's a problem now...Now because a handful of over zealous fanatical PARANOID people, stereotypes spring up:

-everyone on the left will play the race card in this administration
-everyone on the right is a racist
-everyone on the right is NOT a racist
-NO ONE on the left is a racist

What a sweet time in our political history to be partisan to these ideologies.

Re: Jimmy "Smeagol" Carter plays the worn race card

Frankly, I hardly ever think about his race, unless one of his supporters brings it up.

I think most Americans are long past the point where race is a huge, daily, "front burner" issue.

Interestingly, I think light situation comedies on television had more to do with it than any education or indoctrination. It's hard to maintain strong prejudice against people who laugh at the same family issues, even those contrived for T.V., that you do.
