'Doctors told me it was against the rules to save my premature baby'

Read more: Premature baby 'left to die' by doctors after mother gives birth just two days before 22-week care limit | Mail Online

Doctors left a premature baby to die because he was born two days too early, his devastated mother claimed yesterday.
Sarah Capewell begged them to save her tiny son, who was born just 21 weeks and five days into her pregnancy - almost four months early.
They ignored her pleas and allegedly told her they were following national guidelines that babies born before 22 weeks should not be given medical treatment.

Savages. Plain and simple. On so many levels.....

If it is true, then yes.. however it is the Mail.. guess next thing you want us to believe is stories from the National Enquirer?

Not sure of the mail's status, but I don't take anything you say at face value either.

Much like me and your wacko views.. good to know.

yes, personal responsibility, life, and self reliant rugged individualism, oh and liberty... Sovieregnty of the individual, etc.

Such "wacko" views I have....

And only if that was your views...

I firmly believe there needs to be a cutoff in providing treatment to premature babies. I am also against abortion, btw. But these babies are really not viable without extremely prolonged, sophisticated and expensive treatment lasting months and costing more than $1,000,000 per baby. Outcomes vary, but greater than 50% of extremely premature babies have significant ongoing medical problems.

Considering that I myself was born two months prematurely I say your full of ****. These doctors need to go to jail if not murder at the very least manslaughter.

This is actually another "funny" story from the Daily Mail....

If the Mail had not be so fixated in destroying the NHS and being the lap dog of the British Conservative Party, and actually done some research on the issue then this story suddenly becomes very different.

You see the chance of a baby living is very very very small. In fact if the baby had lived it would be the youngest premature babies EVER born. As it stands now the record is 21 weeks and 6 days...

World's Youngest Premature Baby Survives - Associated Content - associatedcontent.com

Most babies born under 22 weeks die, and further up in weeks you go the higher the chance there is for survival. Those are just brutal facts of nature. I understand the pain of this woman but I also understand the doctors if true for doing this. Spending a huge amount of resources on a baby that has less than 1% chance of survival is just a waste of money.

That then begs the question, what is the value of a human life?

Being born 2 months early is more like 31 weeks gestation, not 22 weeks. The prospects for a 31 weeker are much more promising.

We're talking here of a baby born at less than 6 months gestation. You need to have some sort of cutoff.

We can not save every human life. There is a risk/benefit ratio to consider, plus the reality of a limited, communal healthcare dollar.

No matter who you are, unless you are a multimillionaire, the astronomical costs of caring for a baby born before 22 weeks is coming out of the communal pocket of everyone who pays insurance premiums or taxes. In my state, the state picks up the lifetime healthcare costs for any baby born under 2 pounds birth weight.

How many people, meanwhile, are lacking access to a primary healthcare provider, basic diagnostic testing, etc and so forth?

I would also point out that even if a baby born at less than 6 months gestation does survive, the chances of them having any kind of normal development is next to non-existent. Basically, you are saving them inorder to give them a lifetime in a vegetative state.

This is where the horrible cynic in me comes out.

If the woman could afford the treatment at such an unviable phase I would be against them saying no.

However, if she couldn't afford it, and with it being outside of even the most extreme outskirts of viability, I can't really blame the doctor nor the insurance company/state it not allowing it.

I'd say the same thing about a person dieing that has a drug that had a .05% chance of possibly saving his life but would cost people tens of thousands of dollars just to try. If YOU can afford it, alright, but the moment your attempt to do the neigh impossible starts sucking on the teet of everyone else then I'm sorry, but the cost vs reward vs probability must be weighed.

Touche, I can agree with that.

2 months is far different than 4 months.

indeed.....and this story also begs the question, why did this woman continue to become pregnant, miscarriage after miscarriage?

Savages. Plain and simple. On so many levels.....

Savages don't know when to let go. It is my belief that premie @ 21 weeks would have suffered needlessly had they tried to make her/him survive for the limited window available.

are you missing the fact that the woman had been pregnant 7 times at the age of 22......with 5 miscarriages?

who is the savage, really? the doctor who understands the near zero chance of a normal life for that baby, or the stupid woman who doesn't know when to stop?

yeah, so letting that savage bitch's baby die out is the moral thing to do....
