BREAKING: Rep. Charles Boustany of LA to Deliver GOP Response on Health Care

GOP Sources tell me Rep Charles Boustany, a third term congressman and a cardio-thoradic surgeon, will deliver the Republican response to President Barack Obama’s health care speech tomorrow night.

Like Bobby Jindal (whose response to Obama’s State of the Union speech landed with a thud in January) Boustany is a health care expert from Louisiana.


But GOP sources say he'll avoid Gov. Jindal's fate: “Boustany is a common-sense conservative who can communicate our vision for health care reform, and how we want to work with the President to do what the American people want: lower health care costs. He’s also led the effort on behalf of House Republicans to reach out to the other side of the aisle to find real bipartisan reform. We’re pleased with this David-Goliath matchup tomorrow night.”

In all seriousness, I don't know this guy, but on paper he sounds like an excellent choice. Hope he has substantive things to say, and not fear-mongering takedowns. I'd like to hear what the GOPers WANT to do, not what they are against.


ps - I hope I selected the right BN forum. I wasn't sure if it belonged in MSM b/c it's ABC, or blogs b/c it's George's 'Bottom Line' blog on ABC.

I agree with your assertion. It seems they may've picked a good person to give the response considering his background. It needs to be a mix, both giving actual ideas that Republicans think would work better while also highlighting what they think is bad about Obama's, without going into too much hyperbole. Talking about government ineffectiveness, expanding debt, further government involvement in our lives, etc is fine. Using such stupid phrases as "Death Panels" would not be.

Seems the good bubba was also objected to not using :spin:

The issue with the SCHIP bill was not the notion of having the program but the amount of money it was trying to expand, along with the people it was going to expand to (bringing the age of "Children" up to a rather ludicrous age imho).

But yes, it makes him look much bigger and eviler not wanting the big wonderful mother government that taking care of the poor sick children, that big evil republican.

Why is everyone avoiding the real elephant in the room? The opposition to healthcare overhaul stems from those who will lose billions if the system is changed. From the insurance companies to the hospitals and drug makers. As the system is, these people are able to order tests that are wasteful, or block coverage, or charge extreme amounts for cheap pills. There is profit to be lost and these people want to see to it that it does not happen. Lets shine light where light needs to be shone.

The funny thing is they think a Doctor will have more credibility, when much of the problem is that doctors order uneeded tests, many of which are retests that previous doctors have performed, just so they can bill for it.:doh

Duplication of tests, and unnecessary tests is a problem, that's true.
I think denial of coverage is a bigger problem tho.

But, both need to be addressed, no doubt.

the republican doctor can't do any worse than doctor frist who insisted that Terri Schiavo be kept alive

on the other hand, demo doctor Howard Dean seems to have been the one person who has been able to articulate the need for health care reform

it will be interesting to hear boustany's take

This looks like an excellent pick to me. Not a Palin death panel wacko, and certainly not a Democratic big spender. What is going to give him credibility is the fact that he is a doctor. Why would this be important? Because, as a doctor, he is going to have plenty of incentive to gear his comments towards the doctor-patient relationship, and away from centralized control, as represented by either government or insurance companies.

Yes, but as a doctor he stands to lose as well if medicine is mainstreamed. For instance, when one goes to a general practicioner blood tests and the lot are ran. Then one is sent to a specialist and rather than get the results from the general prac, they rerun the tests so they can be paid for those as well. This happens all the time and doctors will lose some income if such things are prevented.

I occasionally see this happen but no very often, and its not like we make much on simple blood tests anyways. Yall know that the preventive medicine O wants will involve running a lot of tests like that to make sure there are no problems.
