And 3 Billion barrels is like 37 days of World consumption!

But it will take the 30 years to play field out.....bummer.

So literally it's a drop in the bucket.
So, your solution, is to do nothing? How's that been working for us, so far?

The job prospects in this case are very limited even if you add all the add-on jobs up. Like it or not the oil industry is not a "people" heavy industry. The cost of getting the oil out of the ground is going to be huge and I bet BP is betting on 100+ dollar oil in the near future or at least before the oil comes on-line in a decades time or so.

For me it is a cost benefit thing.. either we drill like mad to keep our drug habit going with oil, or we find alternatives and slowly ween ourselves off the drug called oil. By investing billions in finding oil, we not only promote a continuing oil consumption, but we also "piss in our pants" .. as we have not invested in alternatives to take over when oil runs out.

Now that aint saying we should not drill for oil at all, nor not exploit this find. My worry is that governments and especially the American, will bow to petro industry pressure and limit investment in alternative energy while move that money into more oil searching.

My solution? Is to keep on drilling where it's allowed now and fund renewable energy projects. And Nuclear energy is fine by me as well.

Also tax the crap out of fossil fuels and use the revenue to offset income taxes on the middle class.

I suspect the market will be able to sort that out.

The oil and gas industry isn't people heavy? Got any numbers to prove that?

The oil companies are in the energy business. They're the folks that are going to be the leaders in alternative energy. The problem, is that alternative energy isn't practicle.

You were doing good, until that last sentence. Punitive taxes are going to kill jobs and raise energy prices, thereby hurting the economy.

    Why only "where its allowed"?

Well this is a rather shortsighted view of the problem and solution.

What do you think would happen to consumer goods if you "tax the crap out of fossil fuels"

I'll give him a hint: it sure as hell isn't coming out of the oil companies' bottom lines.

You mean like it has not done so far? Face it the market is broken because the oil companies have far too much power in the political sphere.

No, the market is broken because the government has far too much power in the economic sphere. If the government weren't so involved in manipulating the market, the oil companies' power in government would be meaningless.

Once again, the government is a sickness masquerading as its own cure.

I sure they would rise to the same extent income taxes would be offset.

But now you have incentives for consumers and companies to save energy.
