FCC’s Chief Diversity Officer Wants Private Broadcasters to Pay a Sum Equal to Their

CNSNews.com - FCC?s Chief Diversity Officer Wants Private Broadcasters to Pay a Sum Equal to Their Total Operating Costs to Fund Public Broadcasting

Mark Lloyd, newly appointed Chief Diversity Officer of the Federal Communications Commission, has called for making private broadcasting companies pay licensing fees equal to their total operating costs to allow public broadcasting outlets to spend the same on their operations as the private companies do.
Lloyd wrote Prologue to a Farce while a senior fellow at the liberal Center for American Progress. In that capacity, he co-authored the 2007 report The Structural Imbalance of Political Talk Radio, which concluded that 91% of talk radio programming is conservative and 9% is “progressive.”

The report argued that large corporate broadcasting networks had driven liberals off the radio, and that diversity of ownership would increase diversity of broadcasting voices.
Somehow this does not suprise me. Doesn't it seem Obamas new communications "Czar" wants to cripple conservative talk radio by imposing a unpayable fee to finance liberal radio.

This is something he promoted in his 2006 book. No word if that is what he will call for in his new role. I do not think it would be a good idea if he does call for it.

Agreed there is no proof he is calling for it at this time. However him wanting to charge fees of current radio broadcasters equal to operating costs is in action. Even if his motives are pure its a ridiculous idea.

In action how? Is that the current policy, or a proposed policy? If not, then there is nothing to complain about yet. I am also leery of articles talking about quotes from peoples books after the whole Ezekiel Emanuel thing, where some quotes where taken out of context to condemn Obama.

Hmmmm....rather than continuing to fund PBS in this depression, shouldn't the government eliminate the easily deleted items like PBS, saving billions annually, forever?

Would we vote for a congress member that promoted this kind of government regulation?

That would never happen. The guy may want that sort of arrangment, but it doesn't pass the laugh test. Any attempt to actually implement it would be dead in the water

Then why is someone, who believes this is the right thing to do, a part of our government? Especially a part of our government who doesn't answer to anyone.

PBS has outlived its usefulness. Everything it does, a commercial channel does at least as well, if not better. It should be ended.

NPR is different in that respect. But NPR does fine as-is.

This cockeyed proposal, of course, comes from the worst totalitarian impulses of liberalism.

I don't know why this guy was appointed Chief Diversity Officer of the FCC (or even what chief diversity officer means, for that matter). I'd guess it's because he's proficient at diversity stuff, and that one single weird idea that he doesn't have the authority to implement and cannot possibly get support for really factored into the decision, though

Especially a part of our government who doesn't answer to anyone.
Keep an eye on the FCC's power - it may get interesting. Comcast has challenged their authority to enforce net neutrality in court, and they have a decent case. The FCC has vastly outgrown its charter and I doubt there is legislative basis for half the things it does. I'm guessing a legislative patch job would be forthcoming if they lose, but updating and enumerating the FCC's powers and responsibilities would be far from a bad thing.

Also, the FCC does answer to congress. I don't know what formal mechanisms are in place, but the FCC is fairly receptive to Congress' wishes. The heads have also been dragged in front of the house or the senate every once in a while for overstepping their bounds/other such activities
