What'll We Do About the Town Hall Screamers? Part 2: The More Things Change...:

"Sometimes they are referred to as the 'radical Right.' But the fact is that there is nothing radical about them. They offer no novel solutions to the problems that plague them; indeed, they offer no solutions at all. They are immensely discontented with things as they are and furiously impatient with almost everyone in public office who can in any way be held responsible for their frustrations. But it cannot be said that they hold any clearly stated objectives or have any specific program either in common or individuals. They are fundamentally and temperamentally 'aginners.' And perhaps the commonest characteristic among them is anger. They can fairly be called, if nothing else, the Rampageous Right."

That's from Alan Barth, writing in the New York Times Magazine on November 26, 1961, talking about, among other things, the rise in conservative activist anger about discussions of starting Medicare. Barth continued that to this group of right wingers, "socialism is an epithet applied indiscriminately to almost any form of collective endeavor. Thus, any governmentally operated insurance program to provide medical care for the elderly is denounced as Socialist." To them, welfare and "even the progressive income tax are all looked upon as satanically inspired deviations from capitalism." Also driving this anger were groups like the John Birch Society (which still exists) talking about Communist infiltration into the civil rights movement and the Democratic Party, a trifecta of a conspiracy theory. Barth mentions how well-funded the groups were by wealthy donors and corporations.

the more things change......

No one was screaming about health care, until this POS bill was written.

i'm sorry......they are screaming now. and they have no idea what they are screaming about.

do you really believe the 70 year old woman protesting against this bill has READ it? lmao.......

The people doing the screaming know more that Obama about what's in the bill. He's already admitted that he isn't familiar with the bill.

do you really believe the 70 year old woman protesting against this bill has READ it? lmao.......

Why would you believe that she hasn't? 70 year old women can't read, or something?

Do you have evidence she didn't?

.

if the people doing the screaming have read the bill, why are they screaming about death panels and medicare? hmm?????

****, you're lucky if the lawmakers have read the bill.

I think there is a lot of misinformation flying around on both sides of this. The whole thing to me seems like kabuki theater, from the Town Hall bull**** things to the outrage...everything seems to be made to deflect away from everything else that is going on. Obama is acting just like Bush, we're doing spying and torture and probably secret prisons (though we won't find out about the new ones, government learned about that from Gitmo), still in Iraq, things in Afghanistan going poorly, economy is in the toilet. But stop the presses! HEALTHCARE! It's a crappy bill that won't do anything really to solve the problem, let's focus on the whole of the situation instead of getting sidetracked by scripted plays by the government to deflect from real issues.

if the people doing the screaming have read the bill, why are they screaming about death panels and medicare? hmm?????

Because they've read the bill!...LOL

right. could you please cite the paragraphs in the bill that refer to death panels and slashing medicare benefits?

Because they've read the bill!...LOL
They might have read it, but they didn't seem to comprehend what it meant. I think a lot of important facts got lost in translation.

so because it's a tough issue we shouldn't tackle it? what's going on now was going on 1 year ago....and obama is trying to deal with all the issues. he inherited a huge mess, to put it mildly.

Why is it only a problem when the Conservative points of view are "protesting" in townhalls?

But the 8 years of Bush saw some of the most loud, vicious, mean spirited, dishonest and downright hateful protests in years was... Democracy in action?

you're right, people behave badly. could we address the point that these particuolar people haven't a clue what they are screaming about?

"Novel" solutions aren't required. The problems are quite mundane. The people getting the care aren't the ones signing the checks. That's the problem.

The other problem is the John Edwards Problem. No, not the charlatan doing the cold-readins and pretending to talk to the dead, the legal slime adulterous ex-Senator that made his fortune by simply pretending to be able to hear dead babies allegedly killed by a hospital, and who therefore raised the cost of everyone using the hospitals, and all the scum bag crap like him. The jury enjoyed his nonsense, I guess. (A clear indictment on the stupidity of people who let themselves get caught for jury duty. No one who can be placed on a jury should be there.)

Clearly, Single Payer is absolutely the wrong way to go.

Clearly, lawyers should be a nationalized industry with no tolerance for private professional practitioners.

Clearly, your Messiah isn't going to fix anything, cuz he's a lawyer, a socialist, and not too damn honest.

WTF are YOU complaining about?

Oh, let's see if we can get this straight....you're complaining that a woman who hasn't read the bill and doesn't want it passed is standing in the way of the president who hasn't read the bill and wants it passed.

Oh, you have too strong an argument on your side, we better stand well back away from you.

liblady, the whole premise of your thread here is the assumption that "we" should "do" anything about it all. As long it doesn't turn violent, there's nothing to be "done." That's the whole idea behind freedom of speech.

You do cherish freedom of speech, don't you?

my "messiah"? lmao.

i find your logic is flawed here.....why would you nationalize lawyers? isn't that a bit socialistic?

They might have read it, but they didn't seem to comprehend what it meant. I think a lot of important facts got lost in translation.

What the bill means is that I'll lose twenty percent of my annual wages, lose my private health care, and have to deal with nice friendly people like those at the DMV to get an ingrown toenail dug out, after waiting behind a herd of illegals.

Yeah yeah yeah, you all SAY "that ain't gonna happen", but then you all ignore the bill of goods used to sell the Sixteenth Amendment, when "only the rich" would pay "just 2% taxes"....hahahaha....or the snow job used to sell Socialist Security, where people initially only paid a small percentage of their wages, a percentage that's increased to 15.4% today, and rising....or the scam that sold Medicaire, which was originally going to cost no more than 10 billion...total.

How's 'bout if you people stop pretending we share your ignorance? How's 'bout you people begin to understand that not only do major government programs NEVER die, they GROW? How's 'bout you people stop selling my freedom to demonstrate your deluded trust in snake-oil salesmen and start learning how to be men. Couldn't you at least begin standing erect?

of course i do.......but i do think these protests are becoming dicey with a high probability there will be violence.

after all, packing a pistol at a town hall meeting is taking it a bit far. and calling for obama's death is beyond the limits of free speech.

my "messiah"? lmao.

Lawyers are agents of the court.

Doctors are private citizens engaged in private business.

Before doctors are nationalized under Messiah-Care, all lawyers should be nationalized to end the discriminatory allocation of legal services based on economic status.

ANYTHING that will deter people from becoming lawyers is a good thing.

An alternative is the Annual Lawyer Potshot Lottery, in which, from the pool of all lawyers, 1% are drawn randomly and their names, photos, and addresses are published. Anyone successfully shooting the lottery winners is awarded a prize of $100 and a beer of their choice.

Lawyers are why the US is sinking, punish them, not the doctors and nurses.

of course i do.......but i do think these protests are becoming dicey with a high probability there will be violence.

Then your messiah needs to call off the goonion squads he's requested to counter the legitimate demonstrations of Americans protesting his socialistic destruction of the United States.

Hell.

MAINSTREAM Democrats were vociferously protesting the funerals of soldiers slain in Iraq.

Right. And because of those two individual extreme things, you want to shut down all the protests?
