Marines Ban "Selected" Websites....

The last thing I'd do is follow Orders blindly when I served...Yet quite a few out here seem to think that's the way the Military should be. I want as much info as I can get before going into a combat zone...;)

Hopefully,,, I doubt if that's changed with the Marines. If you advocate limiting what I can see and hear,,,I don't "feel" like fighting for you, since you're not willing to fight for me.

Off to Work. Take care all.

How melodramatic.

They give "Security Reasons"...But I think they're also trying to control what the Troops have access to. I'll bet B.O. has a hand in this.

Marines Ban Twitter, MySpace, Facebook | Danger Room | Wired.com

You do not join the military to do what ever the **** you want. As many others on this thread have pointed out many times in some form or another loose lips sink ships. The military must have gotten a lot stricter since you were in for you to pitch a fit about the military controlling what their service members do. This has nothing to do with Obama trying to crush marines or Obama plotting some sort of secret military action,Banning military in general from social networking sites is just exercising common sense. Our enemies get the internet too,our enemies get newspapers and watch the news. They are not in a cave in the middle of nowhere cut off from the modern world.

Good god. It's not the American network. It is the American military's network where sensitive information will kill American troops. Are you aware that there are sites that government computers here in America are prohibited to go to? Or should pornography and sites loaded with viruses be allowed to threaten the very systems that keep our government moving be authorized just to suit your rediculous stage of "open networks?" You sure you are a conservative and not a leftist liberal? Because if you've noticed....nobody here shares your extreme complaints.

And besides this....your desires to make this about President Obama smacks of partisan bickering, which leads us to believe that the troops are really a secondary thought to your political bashing. Like I stated....this was occurring under President Bush as well.

I read this thread from start to finish. You give an exemplary performance, as usual. There's not much more to say. This partisan hack is clearly trying to make it about Obama instead of examining the issue holistically.

How melodramatic.

So,,,sticking up for Freedom is Melodramatic Jerry? I find it hard to believe there's so many people out here willing to allow their "Rights" to be decided, and controlled by someone else.

I'm NOT "pitching a fit". I'm pointing out the fact that our Service Personel are now being Censored on what they can see, and hear. No amount of twisting, turning, or blurring of that fact changes what just been ordered.

You seem to think it's "OK" to limit the information our Military can receive. I don't.

As my Name implies,,,I view the World as a Realist. This is Censorship. Whatever your reasons or feelings are,,,doesn't change the fact.

Up your "Partisan" nose.

71-77,,, An "ex-long haired hippy", that Joined up. Talk about "Culture Clash".

Take care.

Actually, it's the serviceman's job to do and die, if necessary. My job was to push a submarine around.

Someone else steered.

Period.

That was what we had to do.

If that meant getting us close enough to kill a soviet carrier and leaving us with zero chance of escape, that wasn't my concern.

If a company of soldiers is ordered to hold a position at all costs, that means exactly what it says...the high command has written you off and you're being sacrificed for some hirer strategic goal. Your bad luck, follow the friggin' orders.

Welcome to the military. It's about the objective, not you.

Yeah.

So what?

You seem to think it's "OK" to limit the information our Military can receive. I don't.

If they don't like it, they can opt out at the end of their enlistment.

But it's perfectly okay, they're not free-as-you please civillians.

Thus far, you have merely bitched about falsehoods. Like I have stated enough times......military personnel view the international and national news from CNN to FOX to ABC daily in the mess halls. They receive letters and care packages. They make phone calls. What exactly is limited? Is your..... "censored on what they can see and hear"... argument seriously based on the fact that they can't connect to YouTube or to sites known to carry viruses?

1) You are ranting over nothing. And the fact that you ignore that this bandwidth and security control has been going on since 2004 so that you can state...... "now being censored".......places Obama as your true heart felt primary with the troops as secondary. Surely someone like you would have bitched about this last year?

2) You aren't pointing out anything but a falsehood and you have found yourself traveled too far down this rediculous path to save any face.

For someone who claims to care about the troop's "freedom" you sure come off as if you could care less about the security that keeps them alive. Perhaps complianing that they can't launch flairs at night or whenever they wish is yet another militaristic or "Obama" way of denying them their freedom? Maybe you should find a nobler way to bash the current President.

Understood... My first ship was the USS Dixon AS37. We serviced the Fast Attack Subs...;) We made sure you "Bubble-Heads" got Home SAFE.

And,,,NEVER "Censored" what you could hear, or see.

Take care.

Yeah,,,I'm "bitching" about our Troops being Censored by this Administration on what they can see, and hear...You, on the other hand,,,have taken the position of defending this action.

How "noble" of you.

Yeah,,,I'm "bitching" about our Troops being Censored by this Administration on what they can see, and hear...

And here is your obsessive falsehood. You have yet to offer anything that suggests that their information is censored nor have you acknowledged that "this" administration had done exactly what the last one did...staye out of military affairs and allowed the military to control their security and networks. Once again, the troops have access to.....

1) ABC, FOX, CNN, ESPN, etc. - Television & Internet

2) Letters

3) Care packages

4) Internet - Any site except blogs, forums, and live streaming videos

It is obvious to all us that your concern focuses on bashing politicians...not voicing for some "injustice" upon our troops (which simply does not exist). And what makes you any different from those politicians who use the troops to boost their popularities or sell their ideas?

You still Censor my responses,,,as you defend the Censorship of this Administration. You've now advanced from being just tacky, to anal-retentive Sarge.:doh

As for the "existence" of Censorship in action, here it is again.

The Marines say they will issue waivers to the Web 2.0 blockade, if a “mission critical need” can be proven. And they will continue to allow access to the military’s internal “SNS-like services.” But for most members of the Corps, access to the real, public social networks is now shut off for the next year.

What part of Internet viruses do you not understand? Security leaks, bandwidth management, live streaming videos, etc. These are legitimate issues that have been issues for years and years....even under the magnificent Republican President Bush! Once again...news channels are available in the mess halls. Letters and phone calls remain. The Internet continues to be available. You have yet to offer anything that suggests that our troops are being kept in the dark about anything. Your ideas of "censorship" continue to be in stubborn error.

I "understand" that you continue to "Edit" my words...While avoiding the Truth. Yep,,,you're anal-retentive. This Administration just castrated the Corp from the real Communications Network of the "Real World",,,you continue to defend keeping our Troops being isolated,,,and denied access to what "We" have.

I'm beginning to think of you as "Used Toilet-Paper"...

...............This Administration just castrated the Corp from the real Communications Network of the "Real World"..........

....Yet, the "Real World" comes in quite clear through the televisions so where are they being censored from "Real World" information? In the fall of 2004, we had to strip the Internet from commodity areas because there were security issues and bandwidth problems. The secuirty issues existed because these NIPR (Non-secure) machines were located near SIPR (Secure) machines. It was quite easy to forget the information you were just dealing with when replying to people in the "Real World" who had questions about Iraq. These NIPR machines were re-located to Internet Cafes. However, the security issues persists. Another issue was that Marines would use thumb drives to pull music off the Internet and plug into other networks and sometimes, music and movie files comes with viruses.

Either you honestly get this or you are stubbornly refusing to get it for favor of bashing politicians. Once again...if the Marine is getting all the "Real World" information he wants from televisions and the Internet (for many commodity areas), then where exactly is their information censored?

1st off,,,we can agree the "Real World" has nothing to do with T.V.;) And yes,,,there are major concerns pertaining to security for our people in a combat zone. Agreed...

However,,, the idea that this Administration has "Ordered" the "Isolation" of our Military from the American Network,,,should worry you.

Because nobody can possibly get their real world news from CNN, ABC, or FOX? Unless its an Internet site with blogs full of people's opinions then the poor troop is ignorant as to the environment he exists in? What even are you talking about now?

This administration has done exactly what the military wanted. It has ordered nothing that wasn't already happening over the course of years. Month month, the lists of banned and unathorized sites grew and grew. Marines don't need the Internet to find out what is going on in the "Real World." It is a luxury and it is not completely shut down. Twitter, MySpace, and Facebook are blog sights and these type sites have been banned for years. They are even banned on government computers here in the United States. But since the troop can get any type of news he wishes from many sources....what exactly conostitutes "censorship" or isolationalism?" You have yet to answer this.

I'm starting to believe that you truly aren't getting this and not playing an act.

It's best I let your "Words" stand, at face value...;)

Wasn't something like this done when GWB was in office?

This has been happening since 2004. I have tried to explain this to this guy, but he refuses to acknowledge it. Blogs, streaming video sites, porn sites, and civilian e-mail sites such as hotmail are unauthorized due to bandwidth complications, viruses, and intelligence leaks. President Obama has done nothing out of the ordinary. In fact, this is a military decision.

They also cannot bring their cell phones across the ocean either because they are not secure and they risk giving away positions. If he is going to complain about security considerations as a way of "controlling" or "censoring" or "isolating" our troops then surely he would go as far as to criticize the denial of cell phones as well for the same reason.

All he's doing is political bashing and using the troops to do it. It pisses me off because it ultimately places the military in the spotlight for nothing.

I thought that it had been going on for a while.
