CQ Politics | Notepad - Speaker Will Keep 'Villains' Money

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., called health insurers "the villains" in the unfolding story of the health care overhaul on Thursday, ratcheting up an anti-insurer theme trotted out by President Obama earlier this month and encouraged by other Democratic leaders in Congress.

"It is somewhat immoral what they are doing. Of course, they have been immoral all along how they have treated the people that they insure," MSNBC's Luke Russert quoted her as saying. "They are the villains in this."

Pelosi, of course, has accepted campaign contributions from said villains this year and in the past, as have most of her Democratic colleagues. Pelosi's campaign committee, for example, took $2,500 from AFLAC's political action committee on April 13. But she's not giving the money back just because she thinks the sources are immoral and villainous.

"As the Speaker's opposition to the health insurance companies being in charge of American's health care shows, there is no link between political contributions and positions on policy," said her spokesman Brendan Daly.

Pelosi ranked 55th among members of the 111th Congress in contributions from health insurers since the 1989-1990 election cycle, according to CRP, having taken in $186,750 (less than $20,000 per two-year cycle).

She talks too much, gets herself in trouble.

She doesn't know what the heck she's doing.

Gene Green (democrat, Houston) was right---the palsied speakeress really blew it when she CRAMMED cap and trade down her delegates' gullets BEFORE doing health care.

The stimulus SHE wrote, not Obama, is also a disaster---economically AND politically.

She doesn't understand the difference between LEADERSHIP and cheap, ordinary opposition POLITICS.

She's lost CRED in her own corner. All that remains to her are threats and strong arm tactics, which can never work in the long run.

In short---LOLOLOL!

On a different, but related, note, I'm just wondering how our Democrat friends are enjoying having to play defense all the time now, instead of having the luxury of being able to do nothing but attack. :)

absolutely, friend harshaw

opposition is cheap, easy and political

leadership is expensive, difficult and visionary

leadership brings killer responsibilities

she's a bitch

our friends on the other side are just learning it, the onerous nature of political physics

our president still doesn't understand, always whining about his "inheritance" and trying to blame the past

making excuses and pointing fingers is not leaderly-like

altho he's made progress, i must concede, since his abject beginning when he spent 3 weeks attacking rush (LOLOL!)

leadership is one thing

leadership in midst of CRISIS is the rarest quality

one pelosi/obama sorely lack

oh well

thanks, friend

You know, to be fair, if she gave the villains' money back, she knows they'd just spend it on CFCs and innocent babies' blood. Keeping their money and using it for her own purposes is the only way to keep it out of the hands of evil.
