Trial Begins in Girl's Faith-Healing Death

Trial Begins in Girl's Faith-Healing Death - CBS News

The girl died from undiagnosed diabetes on March 23, 2008, surrounded by people praying at the family's rural home in Weston in central Wisconsin. Someone called the emergency dispatcher when she stopped breathing.

Oh look.... Diffinitive proof that prayer works.

Seriously though, I can not fathom how the words "I believe" justify these actions. Why do we have to respect someones religion even if it kills, abuses, or "harms for life" their children?

That is child abuse imo
I'd put the parents away

I'm a religious person myself but I totally agree those parents should be put away. God gave people the brains to develop things like medicine for a reason.

Charge them with first degree murder and give them the death penalty, then they can join their murdered child .. no wait, they would be going to hell.. well that would be good too.

Bet they get a slap on the wrist though, if not totally get off.

Well, you "believe" that you have rights and values, no?

If I were an alien, from a distant culture, where there was no such concept, (imagine a hive culture for instance,) I'd probably find the concept irrational.

But I dare say you'd cling to it, even if a case could be made that the world would be better off without you.

We all have beliefs we hold to. Maybe one should consider showing a bit of repect for those of others.

Medical negligence is abuse. I could understand these people praying to God to heal their child if they were in the middle of nowhere and couldn't take their child to a doctor or if they took their child to a doctor and prayed to God to help the doctors heal their child or praying to God to heal your child if the doctors said they couldn't do anything. I do not think God is going to help you out for something you yourself are more than capable of getting accomplished, this is like praying to God to make you a sandwich when you already have the stuff in your fridge to make you a sandwich or you have money to buy you a sandwich or money to buy stuff to make a sandwich. Many Christians would view this as trying to test God seeing how this woman was very capable of taking her child to the hospital. Your right to religion does not trump the life of someone else, nor does it give you an excuse to abuse your child.

If some guy wanted to use religion as an excuse to beat the **** out of his wife. I am sure many people who are sitting there saying that charging these people with murder, manslaughter or homicide is a violation of their 1st amendment right to religion wouldn't be saying that charging this man with assault and battery is a violation of his 1st amendment rights.

I think there's a difference between showing respect for people's beliefs and allowing a girl to die from an easily treatable disease. All our rights end and the rights of others. You're free to practice and express your religion as you see fit so long as you don't infringe upon the rights of others in the process. This girl had the right to life, the same as anyone else. While there must be caution in these cases, we can't outright dismiss them either because religion happened to be involved. Diabetes is easily treatable, and the proper solution would have been to take this girl to the hospital. If she herself refused treatment, that's one thing (though it seems a lot like suicide which we seem to not like so much), but if this is the family actively preventing her from getting information and help which would have allowed her to live its a murder case.

Stuff like this makes me sad. This is almost as bad as the mother who starved her child because he refused to say "amen" at the dinner table. Then they stuffed his body into a suitcase full of moth balls and thought he would be resurrected.

I guess my point is that stupid people plague this Earth. If you are using this instance to say that religion needs to be wiped from the Earth, then you just might be one of those stupid people. Ignorant individuals will do ignorant things even if you take their religion away.

Perhaps I should have elaborated.

I condem the actions of the parents.

But I also was put off by the tone of the OP, which seemd to show disdain for people holding beliefs other than the posters own.

Freedom is a bitch:

1st Amendment:

“ Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Though this is tatamount IMO to yelling "fire" in a theatre and over the line.

And the op's religious bigorty is noted.

So you are saying that because of this, that if someone claims "religion" in murdering someone then they can get off because of religious freedom? I forsee a new religion coming.. "The church of Murder".... and the US prison population going down considerably then.

Well that was dumb and not worth responding to....

It is? that is what you are saying..You are basically defending these religious scum for their actions because they are religious and citing the US constitution. You cant have it both ways.. either these nut jobs are murders or they are not because of "religious freedom" and if the later then.. well you got a far more serious problem if someone figures out to legalize murder or drugs because its their "religion".

What did I post? Please re-read what I posted. Then try again. I will discuss you what I said, not what you wish I said.

Lets reread it then...you wrote.

This has to be a clear defence of their religious freedom to do what ever they think is right even though it resulted in the death of another human.

And that sir, is a disgusting view pure and simple.. it is not freedom... it is murder. No one should get a pass for using religion as a reason for murder.. we dont give Islamic extremists a pass, so why should we give Christian extremists a pass?

Then you come with this gem of a comment.

Though this is tatamount IMO to yelling "fire" in a theatre and over the line.

Here you change attitude, but are not brave enough to go all the way. You basically say that it was wrong but cant get away from the religious freedom aspect as you pad your comments. You do not say it was murder nor do you say directly it was wrong.. you use "politician speak" like "over the line" and "tantamount".. it is double speak and avoiding the truth.. it was murder! .. over the line. gezz that is a comment you use against someone using profanity against someone or someone going a bit nuts and pushing someone in an argument.. that is over the line.. letting someone die or being directly involved in their death is not over the line, it is wrong on so many fronts and highly illegal.. it is murder.

And the op's religious bigorty is noted.

And then you are back to defending the religious zealots that willingly and knowingly let a child die.

Let me guess though, if a Muslim say murdered his child over honour then it was bad right and you would be all over it? And yes it is exactly the same thing. No where in the bible does it say that sick people should only be healed by the power of prayer, just as no where in the Koran does it say it is okay to kill a person over honour.

Do you want my password? That way you can log in and post my position for me, so you don't so disjointed when responding to me with this nonsense.

I've not seen any religious poster defend this so far, PeteEU. They may have taken issue with the OP's tone regarding religious belief, but no one's denied that this a terrible case, and that the parents must be punished for failing to see care for their child.

No, I don't respect beliefs that are demonstrably false.

Prayer does not cure diabetes.

There is no cure for diabetes.

There is a treatment for the symptoms. The negligent parents - should be convicted of negligence, and the whole mob of tearfully preying jerks surrounding them - (no, I did not spell "prey" incorrectly) - , should be convicted as accessories before the fact.

The story says someone called 911 after the victim stopped breathing.

That means that person had a telephone available and could have called 911 when the child was still alive.

Perhaps I should have elaborated.

I condem the actions of the parents.

But I also was put off by the tone of the OP, which seemd to show disdain for people holding beliefs other than the posters own.

I've never hid my disdain for people basing their actions on superstition. I'll respect beliefs that I don't agree with if you have facts to back them up. That said, I'm done with respecting beliefs simply because another person has unfounded faith in them.

Please note, I am quiet capable of separating a persons beliefs from his/her character. Take Ray Comfort for an example. He's a nice, likable, friendly person. His beliefs, however, are moronic.

Give me a reason to respect your beliefs and I will. Faith is not a reason. In fact faith is a lack of reason.

We all have beliefs we hold to. Maybe one should consider showing a bit of repect for those of others.

I have absolutely no respect for the beliefs of parents that allowed their child to die in this manner.

That doesn't mean the way they practiced their religion is the same that everyone else practices the same religion so I am not blaming the religion on this one I am blaming the parents.

However, no, I do not have to respect it. I may have to tolerate it, but I don't have to respect it.
