The guy that torpedoed Session's judge confirmation was in 1986 not 1988. He was an assistant U.S. atty by the name of Thomas Figures.
Turns out Mr. Figures wasn't wrapped too tight. According to some sworn statements by his former colleagues, guess he thought Dan Rather was communicating with him through his TV.
And later after Mr. Figures, a Democrat, trashed Mr. Sessions at his hearing, he was later indicted by federal authorities for attempting to bribe a witness.

The lead Drug Enforcement Agency investigator, another key prosecution witness, admitted on the stand to heavily coaching Christopher in preparation for his testimony.
Figures, who called the prosecution “vindictive and discriminatory,” was found innocent of the single charge against him in March of 1993...."
