Just an FYI! It seems there could be a large scale DDOS attack occurring now. I

Developing…

A number of popular sites and services are down right now for many users, including Twitter, SoundCloud, Spotify and Shopify. The cause appears to be a sweeping outage of DNS provider Dyn, as a result of a DDOS attack, according to a post on Hacker News.

We’re tracking the outage and will let you know if we discover anything further about outage length, cause or sites affected.

Other sites experiencing issues include Github, Airbnb, Reddit, Freshbooks, Heroku and Vox Media properties. Users accessing these sites might have more or less success depending on where they’re located, as some European and Asian users seem not to be encountering these issues.

Massive Dyn DNS outage

Sites down:

- DYN

- Twitter

- Etsy

- Github

- soundcloud

- spotify

- heroku

- pagerduty

- shopify

- intercom (app, not landing page)

Note that if these sites seem to be up to you, it's likely that your machine has cached the DNS response for these sites.

Some of these sites seem to work when using a UK VPN

Twitter works fine for me and no, it's not cached.

I ****ing hate DDOS'ers. They can all go take a hike.

All sorts of **** I don't use. How will anyone be able to tell the world of their mundane day without twitter!!??

Well Trump won't be able to throw a temper tantrum if Twitter is down.

That won't stop him from throwing a temper tantrum, it will just prevent him from tweeting it to the world.

UPDATE: As of 9:36 AM ET, Dyn says it has restored its DNS services to normal operation.

Can you imagine the tiny hands discovering that his twitter didn't tweet? OMG, it's a conspiracy....the dems...do I call the Enquirer....?

It sounds like competitors of Chinese sites.

I never use any of these, which is probably just as well.

Could this be a prologue to Nov 8th?

(pls don't banish me to CT)

I was going to be very upset if I had to spend a couple of hours without reading tweets from Kanye, Kim, Miley, and Beiber. I'm so glad they got it sorted out so I don't miss any important information.

Netflix appears to be down as well.

WHAT HAPPENED?

The latest attack comes the day after Doug Madory, director of Internet Analysis at Dyn, gave a presentation at an industry conference about research he had done on questionable practices at BackConnect Inc., a firm that offers web services, including helping clients manage DDoS attacks.

According to Madory, BackConnect had regularly spoofed Internet addresses through a technique known as a BGP hijack, an aggressive tactic that pushes the bounds of industry.

Madory's research was conducted with Brian Krebs, a well-known writer on computer-security issues. Krebs also published an article based on the research last month. Within hours, his website was hit by a “extremely large and unusual” DDoS attack, he wrote.

The barrage likely originated with a large amount of poorly secured devices like internet-connected cameras, routers, and digital video recorders, according to an analysis of the attack on Krebs's site.

These devices, collectively referred to as the “Internet of Things,” have been the source of an increasing number of attacks since early 2015, Flashpoint and Level 3 Threat Research Labs said in a report published last month.

BackConnect has denied having any connection with the incident involving Krebs's website, and didn't immediately respond to a request for comment Friday.

Krebs wrote on his blog Friday that he had no evidence that the attacks on Dyn were related to Madory's research. Dyn didn't respond to requests for comment Friday.
